I've always impressed upon my students that the most memorable lessons come from failure and repetition. For example, if you've ever been burnt no one needs to remind of the dangers of fire. Ad campaigns cement themselves in our memories via the repitition of slogans and jingles. We need to retain what works and what doesn't and reflection, is the process of documenting our successes and more importantly our shortcomings. Allowing us to then question our approach and posit new strategies. It's a recursive process, the output of the last reflection becomes the input of the next. If as practitioners we truly reflect we will not only grow in the mastery of our subject area but in our ability to deliver a cohesive lesson.

I often showcase reflection and meta cognition by providing reflections and final thoughts on the work samples I provide. As part of our ongoing teacher evaluations, we have to select and track goals throughout the year. Some of the goals are for us as teachers and others are based upon student achievement. Throughout the year, I select and upload evidence of my progression on my goals. I always type a reflection on why I chose that sample as evidence as well as what I learned. In my reflections, I like to embrace that the goal is not to be perfect but to always improve. I am conscious in choosing samples that may not have gone as planned as well as those that did. The purpose is to track my learning.

In my experience, you can use lesson plans, student work samples, recordings from your class, action research projects - really anything! The important thing is that your samples do not have to showcase your perfection as a teacher. It is to show your growth. I choose things that are meaningful to me. Sometimes the samples I choose showcase how I made a mistake and improved.
