I've worked with thousands of senior executive during my executive search career, and I have observed this: They approach their careers with an "agile mindset". They are sophisticated enough to understand that any business is effected by factors outside of their control...and they roll with the inevitable turmoil of that reality. So rather than "defining goals", they define their mindset... and the most successful mindset I've observed is one of curiosity blended with the persistency.

Defining your career goals is the first step towards a successful and fulfilling professional journey. ??As a Career Coach and Resume Writer, I advise to start by envisioning where you see yourself in the next 5 or 10 years. Reflect on your passions, strengths, and personal values. What truly excites and motivates you? Set specific, measurable, and realistic goals that align with your aspirations. ??Remember, your goals should be challenging enough to stretch you, but also attainable. I find that even executive job seekers miss this idea from a broad perspective. There are "tactical" goals like financial goals, industries you enjoy, skills you'd like to apply/grow, etc. However, I find the more impactful advice comes from listening not only to what you really enjoy, but listening to what OTHERS see in you in terms of your strengths. Goals should be dynamic, and really start with "your why". Short sighted income, commute and title goals lose their luster quickly, even after they are achieved compared to more "core" goals like purpose, lifestyle, meaning, being a part of a winning culture, and finding organizations that align with your interests and values.

Other commenters have said that 'defining goals' should be balanced against 'being aware of unexpected opportunities', so I'll consider different types of goals. - Personal development & identity goals. Who do you want to be? What do you want to learn? - Social identity goals. Who do you want to be known by and what for? - Purpose & value goals. What difference do you want to make in the world? What is important to you?

The clearest way to show off your career impact it to quantify, quantify, quantify your results! Use dollar amounts, percentages, and highlight if the tool you created is still being used after you have moved on from that role.

Documenting your impact in my mind is "update your resume and LinkedIn profiles simultaneously when impact is achieved." It's VERY easy to forgot one's accomplishments a few years after they are met. When you view your LI and resumes as living, breathing documents, you'll be ready the moment you need them for a career/role change. Also, in my professional opinion as a career coach and recruiter, portfolios are very industry specific. In technology related roles, it's border line irrelevant. In design related roles, it's expected. Know your industry standards to see if making a portfolio, a resume, a CV, or perhaps publications are the best way to go to showcase your impact. Industries/standards vary greatly!

Some ways to get started include quantifying some performance attributes.Use trends, timelines, comparable brands or other ways to showcase/interpret what that means. Example 1: In my case, when fulfilling a Marketing Lead role, I was responsible for acquiring 1 million customers in 11 months for a fintech platform. That’s comparable to Facebook that did a similar number in 12 months in the same region. Example 2: I coordinated a multimedia campaign in 8 languages across 20 media houses. Example 3: Qualitatively, my brand won several awards including the prestigious Loeries Award. Take the time to observe, track and record performance on an ongoing basis. This will come in handy when negotiating for a promotion or salary increase as well.

Before you can document it, you have to recognise it. A couple of techniques to help you recognise your impact. Counterfactual thinking We often use this to reflect on how we could have done better. But you can also think about how you could have done worse - which can help you to recognise the good things you did or the bad things you avoided. Following on from this you can do an exercise in which you imagine recruiting someone to go back in time and take your place in the activity. What qualities would your replacement need to do the job as well as you and to avoid the mistakes you sidestepped?

When it comes to telling your story, you need to share two things: your personal experience stories to demonstrate commitment, ability and above all to connect with the heart of someone else, and your impact stats eg grew income by x, improved productivity through introducing new processes by y. These appeal to your recruiter's logical brain. When you combine the relevant stats and stories, you become totally memorable. Oh, and use keywords that match the recruiter to do this when it comes to applications and interviews. As a lawyer, this are some of the things that I do to show off my career impact; I build a detailed portfolio of my significant legal achievements, including descriptions of my roles, outcomes achieved, and challenges that I overcame on my career. I highlight and emphasize any high-profile or landmark case I have been involved in, as I know these can immediately grab attention I display any awards, accolades, or honors that I have received during my legal career. I believe they serve as third-party validation of my expertise.

When sharing your story, there’s one big mistake I see all the time. That’s talking only about your accomplishments. Especially as high performers, we like knowing that we hit the numbers, but the truth is, quotas & metrics are only half of the formula. The piece that’s missing is YOU. So, when I’m working with a client, I coach them through a 5-step process to answer these 3 critical questions. 1. What are the biggest lessons you’ve learned in your career? 2. What are you really good at doing? 3. What are your most important values? With both solid accomplishments + clear answers to these questions, you’re set up to tell a career story that’s incredibly authentic and compelling at the same time. Now, that’s worth celebrating!

I've found that self evangelism, to my colleagues and friends, along with publishing thought provoking and relevant LinkedIn articles is a great way to create your brand and share your story. I've never been chided for being "too real/authentic/vulnerable". It's these traits that draw people in, and think to yourself "why would I care to read this?" If you can move the needle emotionally via your expertise, you can create a brand you are proud of.

CAROL Context - The minimum background info you need to understand the scale of the challenge Actions - What you did and how you did it. Reasons - The thinking behind why you did those things rather than something else. What choices you made. Outcomes - What happened because of your actions and what might have happened if you hadn't acted that way. Learning - What you could have done differently and what lessons you take from this into future tasks.

I believe that only through feedback and self reflection can we grow. Whilst it can at times feel painful to receive, if delivered in the right way and accepted with an open mind it can offer insight and further growth.

Seeking career feedback is an empowering step towards growth and success. ??To start, I always tell my clients to approach their mentors, supervisors, or trusted colleagues who can provide valuable insights. I tell them to be open-minded and receptive to their suggestions, knowing that feedback is a gift that helps them enhance their skills and refine their career path. I then proceed with telling them to reflect on their feedback and identify patterns or areas for improvement. I truly believe in embracing feedback as a catalyst for personal and professional development, and using it to fuel your journey towards an even more fulfilling and rewarding career.

If you really want to grow and have impact, listen carefully to feedback from your superiors and peers. They will let you know what you are doing great. Keep doing that. Get better at it. This is your “gold.” They will hopefully find time to let you know where you need to grow. Think about it, take action. Transform your shortcomings into your strengths. And share your way of achievement. This is how you make impact for others.

Depending on how brave you are, you can ask for feedback at different levels. What - feedback on outcomes and context. Could you have achieved something better? How - feedback on behaviour and skills. How could you have approached it differently? Why - feedback on motivation and intentions. Could you have been trying to achieve something else? Who - feedback on identity. Could you see yourself differently and think about how others see you?

In your career you may have an opportunity to develop unique skills and interests-things you become the go- to person for. Career ‘extras.’ I call them kites. If you have 1 or 2 kites you fly, these can make you stand out when recruiters are shortlisting.

In my professional experience thus far, I find it challenging to recall the impact that I have made in my organization, community and lives of my clients. I just work hard assuming that my work would be recognized, appreciated and respected by my results. However, results don't necessarily reach senior management. It isn't until performance reviews that I recognize how awesome I am and the work that I do. Articles as these, help me to knock down professional insecurities, create strategic professional goals and make it easier to do for myself what I easily do for others.
