One thing that is important in DevOps on all apps, especially UC apps on BYOD devices is for the app developers to "shift left" and stop attacks sooner by dening bad actors initial access. For example, on a BYOD smartphone there are two common attack vectors that are often overlooked: vishing and smishing. Vishing aka "voice phishing" is a socially engineered attack typically initiated by a robocall with the intention to steal your credentials including MFA to gain access to enterprise systems with the intent to exfiltrate data or install ransomware. By installing an app on your BYOD device such as Mutare's VTF Mobile, these vishing attempts can be mitigated before the phone rings. The same holds true with smishing attacks AKA SMS phishing.

2 Encrypt your data and communications

The second step to secure UC apps on BYOD devices is to encrypt your data and communications. Encryption is the process of transforming data into an unreadable format that can only be deciphered with a key. VPN is a bit old fashioned don't you think? Cloud apps on BYOD should be using encryption for sure. Make sure that the connection from your voice or UC platform and the cloud service is secure and encrypted and then allow the users to connect to the cloud platform only - making sure your mission critical systems are never touched by the BYOD devices.

Our advise is always find something that delivers SSO capability and then you can ensure that the user is using their work credentials (that you can control) to access the UC application. In my experience, carefully assess the use of BYOD and ensure your organization is managing your business apps on each and every device with the use of MDM tools, and other mobile oriented tools to protect from data loss as well. Every app and every end point is the perimeter, requiring vigilance and closely monitoring for any suspicious activity.
