How do you scale and sustain your platform while maintaining community engagement and ownership?

In my experience, defining a clear vision and values for the community is essential for alignment. It establishes a foundation that everyone can follow. In my projects, I always start with a clear mission and shared values, which helps guide interactions and decisions within the community, keeping everyone moving in the same direction.

Here are some key strategies : -Keep the community informed about changes, new features, and upcoming events through newsletters, forums or social media. -Monitor user engagement metrics to identify what content or features resonate most with the community. -Acknowledge and reward active contributors to motivate others to participate. -Test new initiatives on a smaller scale before wider implementation to gather feedback. -Clearly communicate any changes to policies, features, or community guidelines.

In my experience, the key to scaling and sustaining a platform while keeping community engagement high is to actively involve members in the decision-making process. I regularly seek their feedback and encourage them to take ownership through leadership roles or content contributions. To sustain your platform while maintaining community engagement, it's important to define your audience and ensure you have the right members in your community. Once you have the right members, create a sense of belonging, reward active participation, and encourage leadership roles within the community. If you have the right members whose goals align with the community vision, maintaining engagement will be much easier.

Not every platform is able to serve every type of community, which is why it is so crucial to be clear about the goal of the community and the KPIs you set for your community. However, it is just as important to bring in your community when making such a decision and co-create, by asking them for what THEIR needs are, in order to be able to serve them in the best way and make sure they will actually want to spend time in the community...

Involving your community in co-creation and governance is key to sustain engagement in the long term. Ownership of the process from the beginning until the end fosters participation in people. For example, when we create campaigns with our community, we involved them in the creation of the campaign from the beginning (message, tone, design…). The result has been that when the campaign is out participation is high due to ownership and adaptability of the campaign to the individual and collective needs

This is community in a nutshell. You should always base your community initiatives, events, topics, etc. off what the members see value in. Constantly asking members how you can best support, what they would like to see in the community, getting feedback, etc. all helps build this foundation and value within the community. You can scale once this initial value has been created and solidified.

Identify the community audience and understand segmentation in that realm. That will help you identify different audience and their pain points and in turn inform your solution action plan to meet their expectation in the community.

Here, 'segment' doesn't exactly mean dividing the community into parts. It's just about identifying smaller groups of people who agree with each other's perspectives. Then, such smaller sub-groups can have healthy discussions with other such sub-groups and then reach a conclusion together.

Everyone learns differently. One member may learn by asking questions and attending events, where another may learn from simply reading discussions and content. Everyone gets value in different forms so it is important to try and understand each member and deliver value in a variety of methods. By delivering these different streams and options for members, everyone can naturally segment themselves based on what they see value in participating in.

Segmenting involves understanding the diverse needs and behaviors within your community, while supporting means equipping members with the resources and guidance to thrive. Together, these strategies ensure that every member feels seen, valued, and empowered to contribute. In my experience, tools like user personas, analytics, and tailored onboarding journeys are invaluable for personalization. Adding elements like tutorials, gamification, and recognition programs creates a sense of achievement and belonging. When you meet your community where they are and invest in their success, you create a platform that people want to grow with.

Identify sub-groups. Provide tailored content/resources. Empower community leaders. Foster collaboration between segments. Continuously gather feedback to support diverse needs.

Discovering your Lions - those who have the desire and ability to advocate FOR your community - is a place worthy of continuing to invest time. Community leaders may come and go BUT they help to move away from a community quickly becoming a cult of personality. They body-double for YOU, the community builder. Thats when you can actually grow with authenticity.

You can't foster a sense of community ownership with unchecked growth. Large crypto communities can be impressive, but chasing numbers often leads to a disconnected audience with no real stake in the project's success. I cultivate a network of passionate micro-communities by identifying and empowering Community Champions. These champions are the backbone of long-term engagement. Nothing is more important than identifying your key community members and leaders. These are the people you can trust first and leverage to your advantage. Seek their feedback and insights, and make sure to actually CAPITALIZE on the information they provide. Of course, you can always give them some extra responsibilities, and it's always nice to involve them in decision-making.

Your top 1% of members are the ones who will be creating content, helping those understand the guidelines and carrying the culture you've outlined. Ensure you invest in that top 1% of engaged members who 'get it'

Little and controlled variations should be encouraged (and they do not need to be run by the company, let the community drive them!). Check the result, evaluate if they provide the desired outcome. If done collaboratively, both successes and failures will be celebrated. And the end of the day, the ownership resides in the own community, so they should be the ones taking the lead when experimenting improvements.

You need to actually give a f*ck about people. That's the thing about communities... After a point in time, people stop seeing it as fellow humans and start seeing it as a money printing machine. The moment you reach that mindset, you lose. And that's why you need to stay connected with the people in your community (also stay humble and grounded) The community vibe is what drives a lot of top brands right now! If you give a damn about people - they will pay you back in different ways! :)

I think it honestly the biggest area where communities go wrong... growing too fast. The first year of your community should be focused on quality – a community filled with great people that understand community, are engaged, and see immense value in what you are doing. Community fails when the numbers grow too fast and the quality of engagement cannot keep up. We would much rather have 500 incredibly engaged and active members then thousands that are just there and the community is dead.

Connecting to your community is another way of building a sustaining community. You connect to them by always listening to their needs not doing what you thing is their need.

Remember, a thriving community isn’t built on metrics; it’s built on trust and shared ownership.
