How do you reward team members with different roles and responsibilities?

The best way that I learnt working with the Biggest 2 of top 10 companies worldwide, is 1o on 1. Yes, there is no better mode to have predefined meet ups for interacting on 1 to 1 basis & fully understanding the team as surveys & questions, most of the time, are filled with caution and fear.

Assessing your team's diversity goes beyond just headcount. It involves understanding the depth and breadth of your team's makeup across various dimensions and gauging how inclusive your team environment is.

It is critical to understand the team’s dynamism and their individual preferences to what they value. Human beings based on the Maslow’s theory of Needs indicate that at certain stages of our lives, different things appeal to individuals, I remember when we had a drive to get new clients and we had divided the team into two. When one of them was able to get a much expected client, I had tried to reward the 3-man team with a lunch or dinner at a five star hotel. We had gone ahead to book, until a team member from the other team informed me that they would rather I give them the money than spend for food in an hotel. After this incident, I learnt it is better to design a framework, agree on what to reward and its frequency.

Simply put, even the most upright and stiff upper-lipped top executive also craves for praise and recognition, it's basic human trait as all of us in both personal as well as corporate space, have an innate need to belong. R&R has to come naturally to leaders and as a team leader, it is your duty to both know and recognise your team's intrinsic motivators. Starting from a simple 'smile' to "well done" to a structured programme is how the construct should be. While timely and periodic appreciation is a given, however it is equally imp to reward right behaviours, so that right value systems get reinforced. If we start rewarding on the basis of end results, without getting into the details of "how" part, Pandora's box is waiting to open up.

One thing I've found helpful is, rewarding good behavior and not just results. Good behavior usually leads to positive results. However, the results may not happen right away. So, by rewarding the behavior you incentivize your team to apply more of that behavior. For example: If a team member take initiative to solve a problem that was not their responsibility, that behavior should be rewarded regardless of the outcome. This will let everyone know, that type of behavior is appreciated.

Yes this I agreed... In my own experience, is important to know the strengths & weaknesses of each individual. This makes it easier for me to "assign" the task which will help to achieve the result and goals set based on each different individual character traits. Having to provide "rewards" is a way to push and motivate member to work towards the goals as one... In my opinion, if the targets/tasks requires teamwork,rewards should be awarded to all as a whole....rewarding what the team achieve as a team.... But of course, it could also "backfire" if leaders is found "taking side" within the members... Is important for leaders to strike a balance,having open communication and give clear direction on what to expect as a team.

Aligning reward with objectives is key in maintaining a motivated team. It shows the team that you really gauge and value the required efforts and encourages team members to want to assume new and bigger challenges. I believe this not only important for motivation, but also for keeping teams and team members growing and learning.

In my experience, you need to recognize both. Individual efforts especially when the overall achievement of the team does not reflect the true contribution some individuals are making and team effort when it is driving the growth and success of the department. One shouldn't overshadow the other and that's the only way to create champions within the team who can be reached out to for best practices and show the team spirit and its importance in creating a healthy work environment.

I certainly think that each individual have certain key attributes that leads to success in their respective tasks. When working with team, the leader who identifies such attributes within the individuals and recognising those small efforts which creates effective impact, sees more confidence and harmony within the team. The individual feels more accountable for those attributes which can turn into best practises.

From experience, balancing individual and team rewards involves designing a compensation and recognition system that recognizes both individual contributions and collaborative team efforts. Considering a combination of performance-based incentives for individual achievements and team-based incentives for collective success. This approach encourages a healthy balance, fostering individual motivation while reinforcing the importance of teamwork and collaboration. Regularly assess and adjust the reward structure to ensure it aligns with the organization's goals and values.

A simple effective rule is: For personal rewards, progress and reaching goals = do this one on one In any other case: consider it always as a team success/failure. It will help you staying away from "island thinking" and "blaming others". If you praise one out of a team, you are simultaneously, maybe unintentionally, telling the others that they don't deserve that praise.

Varying rewards and delivery is important in diverse teams and it can also prevent monotonous arrangements. The reason I will advise a Framework to be designed by the team is for fairness and equity. The indices would have been agreed upon so that whoever gets rewarded know what they need to do regarding role clarity, understanding other members role and the teams’s goal in alignment with the organization’s. The interaction between the team fosters a healthy debate as we made room for a dice to be thrown up to decide some rewards. The game like- mode of deciding also makes it more fun.

It all vary from person to person.. and also depending upon authorities I've to reward such individuals .. some people get motivated by monetary aspects and some by only appreciation.

Rewards can be provided in the form of chances to assume fresh responsibilities, spearhead a project, or collaborate with a different team. Such opportunities can greatly contribute to one's professional development and overall job contentment.

From my experience as a Consultant, one thing seems to have an overbearing influence in the rewarding of a team. This one thing is that many Companies and Team Leaders seem to be giving the same kind of rewards to not only every team but also every team member who deserves recognition. This causes Teams and Members to get bored because they know what they will get when they achieve their team goals and objectives. On the contrary, finding new ways of giving rewards creates a novel excitement which inspires everyone to put in his/her best effort to succeed both personally and in unison. As a Team Leader and as a CEO find novel ways to reward your members or teams, and in return performances beyond your wildest imaginations will be the norm.

I agree that all methods listed above are fabulous ways to recognize your staff on an individual and team level. It is true that anything predictable becomes boring, overdone and positive moral isn’t maintained. In my opinion, what works well is listing all of these and having your staff members place a number in order to how they would like to be rewarded in order from top to bottom. A great way to reward individual staff is to provide them with their perfect schedule. Asking each staff what their perfect work schedule would be and have them list three gives you more ways of rewarding them & it creates diversity when creating the best schedule. A great schedule relieves stress at work, home, less call outs & a healthy work/life balance.

It′s the little things that make a difference. Offer casual Coffee Talks 15 mins with non business task conversations. Send personal greetings or gifts for Birthday or company anual anniversaries. Include employes in the future planing and consideration process.

You may keep track of their productivity and reward their successes based on the extraordinary achievements, over the top creativity and out of the box solutions. In my personal experience, I’ve been recognized & rewarded appropriately and I’ve also had my personal rewards stolen & given to others in front of me, to make the reward system seem more fair to the manager presenting the reward. In my opinion, that will cause resentment as well as create a separation between the staff and management. Management has now created a toxic work environment. It is important to recognize and reward those who actually get and deserve the reward. Otherwise, you are giving a false sense of recognition to the entire staff which makes you a liar & not to be trusted. Make sure your management is held accountable for their behaviors in maintaining a healthy, balanced work environment. Work with them not against them.

Celebrate small wins frequently. It will boost team motivation. Do not wait for grand events to celebrate success. Be agile. Create Pace. Acknowledge progress over perfection.

Rewards are not be linked with compensation and benefits, which anyway based on individual performance against set objectives. Rewards are for occasions when one goes above n beyond to achieve, delivering in uncertain world or could be creating customer delight. This really makes employees felt that the efforts were notice and has been well acknowledged My personal opinion is such rewards should be done always one level above from immediate managers which also give sense of importance to employees right above the supervisors. Involve family as well, as such efforts by individuals are not just possible without family supporting. A personal touch always live more than appreciation with peers!
