1 Check the structure and flow

Your business case should have a logical and coherent structure that guides the reader from the problem statement to the proposed solution, the expected outcomes, the costs and benefits, and the implementation plan. Make sure that each section has a clear purpose, a concise summary, and a smooth transition to the next one. Use headings, subheadings, bullet points, and tables to organize your information and make it easy to scan. Avoid unnecessary details, jargon, and repetition that might confuse or bore the reader.

1) Write the main body first, then conclusion, and introduction last. Only when we have the report content, then we know the best way to craft the introduction and executive summary. However, do start with objectives and background, where relevant. 2) Begin with the end in mind, know the ideal/intended outcome before starting. Do online research, ask ChatGPT, and/or speak to others. Depending on the report, have some plausible scenarios, e.g. to proceed with proposal or maintain status quo. 3) Proofread a day after completing the report. Good to go through at least 3 times before the first submission. Proofread when the mind and eyes are fresh, e.g. first thing in the morning, after an energising break, or after a nourishing meal.

2 Review the content and argument

When crafting your business case, you should ensure that it presents a strong and persuasive argument for why your project or initiative is the best option to address a specific problem or opportunity. As you review the content and argument of your business case, ask yourself if you have clearly defined the problem or opportunity and its impact on the organization, researched and analyzed the current situation and alternatives, provided evidence and data to support claims and assumptions, explained the benefits and value of your solution for the organization and stakeholders, identified and mitigated risks and challenges of your solution, estimated costs and resources of your solution compared to the benefits, and outlined a realistic and feasible implementation plan and timeline.

5 Finalize and format your document

The company may have a style sheet or manual, such as Chicago or AP, to guide your decisions on font type, size, etc. Check before you get too far into formatting. Also references need to be kept organized fully as you go along and not hunted for as an afterthought. It saves a lot of time and trouble and insures the accuracy of the document.
