How do you recognize your team's success in a sprint review?

This is always to be aligned with Sprint goals, so first it is pertinent that Sprint goals are mentioned in a way that the value of each goal is understandable across the board and user acceptance criteria are mentioned in binary! Then based on the goals and acceptance criteria, team success can be measured in terms of goals achieved, acceptance criteria met, quality of work, and adherence to timelines.

While they don't reach that, they can celebrate because of new things which they have learned. - There is not such a success or a fail in the Scrum. Recognizing sprint success in a Sprint Review involves evaluating the outcomes of the sprint against the goals and commitments set during Sprint Planning. For eg; sprint goal met, delivery of working increment. Definition of done met. Stakeholder satisfaction. Delivering high value.

Team success in a sprint review : With my experience with sprint review is one of the best ceremony in SCRUM, team can exhibits or showcase the sprint goal to all the stakeholders (Engineering , Product mgmt, etc.) and stakeholders appreciate the team contribution and deliveries as per sprint goal, If there are no spill overs means "it is a GREAT success achievement to the team". This will boost and motivate the team to continue doing the good work in the future sprints, etc.

I look beyond the standard metrics of velocity and burndown charts and consider the nature of the backlog items tackled. Did the team prioritise work that maximised value? Did they balance addressing technical debt versus delivering new features? Did they show an ability to manage their workload, or are there signs of consistent over- or under-commitment? I look at the quality of dialogue around meetings. Were there instances of cross-functional collaboration that led to creative problem-solving? Did their approach to the backlog foster a culture of collective ownership and continuous improvement? This qualitative assessment provides a more comprehensive picture of the team's efficacy and can drive more meaningful recognition of success.

I've actually found periodic review of the backlog helps us weed out chunks of work that could be de-prioritized so the team can focus on delivering meaningful output. This in turn will enrich the product and we will be adding value to the product incrementally.

It's very possible that your planning wasn't perfect and that the team delivered something that was better than the plan. Make sure that you evaluate all parts of your sprint, including the ceremonies, when reviewing the sprint.

I've personally found the sprint review to be a good space for inexperienced teams to start showing their code to other teams and interested parties. If you have a team that isn't fully sharing their code with everyone on the team regularly, this is also a good space to start doing that more. Many teams I've worked with have started doing this in reviews and gradually worked toward more spontaneous reviews (and pair programming when I've been successful in advocating for that).

A Scrum team may create several Increments during a Sprint. While it does not necessarily need to be shipped immediately, subsequent increments are additive, not independent. It can be beneficial to seek feedback early, even before an increment is ready, to help maximise an increment's value. The Sprint Review is a good opportunity to learn from wider feedback and collaborate on what to do next, but cannot change the past.

One of the ways that I have started to celebrate the month's achievements (typically 2 sprints) is through an organization-wide newsletter. This newsletter covers the most important highlights and projects of the month, and thank and appreciate the team members who worked on those tasks. This really helps in celebrating with the entire organization. At times, certain team members feel discouraged if their contribution is not counted but that's a job for the product manager or the scrum master to ensure due credit and recognition is given to everyone who has contributed to the growth. Depending on your organization's size, you may do this at a team level as well. The bigger the audience of the newsletter, the better it is.

It is very important to share positive feedback aka Appreciation if the team have completed the sprint goal as it would motivate them to continue doing the good work in future. "celebrate the success" is key mantra to keep team engaged.

As a software developer, I participated in many sprint retrospectives that follow a "Start, Stop, Continue" model of gathering and discussing feedback about the previous iteration. As a manager, my teams add a "shout-out" section to our discussion to encourage praise between peers as well as from management. It helps individual contributors realize that they are valued by their peers, and it can showcase otherwise unknown contributions from the quiet contributors who aren't as comfortable singing their own praises. Sharing moments of gratitude as a team, and enabling peer praise, is a great way to recognize the ongoing successes of your team, no matter how big or small.

We use "shout-outs" at the beginning of some of the ART ceremonies to give recognition to teams and individuals. It is usually a brief overview of the accomplishment and what value was achieved.

I believe that human interaction is invaluable, especially when it comes to discussing challenges. A simple retrospective with three open questions for every team member - what went well and made me happy/proud, what did not or what disturbed me, and what still puzzles or challenges me - might give new perspectives of the team's overall mood, challenges, and strong/weak sides. It gives everyone time/space to contribute to how we work as a team. It also teaches you to listen to your colleagues and empathize with them, thus building a stronger team.

When setting expectations for the next sprint, a solid Sprint Planning process includes: *Scrum Team members discussing mid-sprint discoveries from the previous sprint (i.e. a task assigned too few story points in estimation *Stakeholders approaching Scrum Team with new requests, requirements, and features) For new and practiced Scrum Teams alike, using feedback from working through the previous sprint as empirical evidence serves as a guide to better estimation and refinement processes for the next sprint. Discussing mid-sprint discoveries and additions with the Scrum Team helps sharpen decision making, agreement, and efficiency in producing successful Increments that fulfill the User Story and product requirements.

When we are planning a new sprint, my team and I have few metrics/views. First of all, we take a look at the holiday calendar, because it allows us to understand our possible velocity's and gives better understanding to the team if we will have all the needed colleagues working. For example, if maybe one of the lead backend developers will be on holiday. The second is velocity which we recalculate after every sprint. The last one, and in my opinion, the most important is the sprint goal. It's necessary to have some sprint goals for the team to see how they contribute to the company's grow. Also, there should not be too many sprint goals, so the team will be able to keep focus on key objectives.

While the sprint review is a timeboxed session with specific limitations, I always find some time to pass on the team sentiments to POs. This greatly helps in building a trustworthy relation with stake holders based on tough but realistic expectations.

Tricky part here is how to manage those expectations, since they should not become an exact plan for a next sprint. Sure Product Owner should take into account that feedback when changing Product Backlog priorities, but it doesn't mean that those expectations will be met.

In each sprint review, it's important to recognise the efforts of the team as a whole as well as give individual credits to the people who delivered different features or user stories. It should be an interactive session where everyone can give their review and suggestions for further improvement. Such structure provides the team with motivation to perform their best. Also, the action items from each review needs to be closely tracked and monitored. At times, even team members can be given the opportunity to demo the features on which they have worked on to the stakeholders which helps to build the confidence of the team members and instills trust within the scrum team. A small gesture can make a difference in creating a wider impact.

A Scrum team is on the path to success if the following elements are seen in the sprint review: - Overall environment is positive - Review is collaborative & there are no surprises - Stakeholders show positive intent - A demo, a discussion & collecting of feedback are integrated well in the review - The Sprint Goal & the overall direction in which the Product is heading towards (the Product Goal) is effortlessly a part of the discussion - Market (User) feedback is collected for the previous release - The Scrum Master (SM), Product Owner (PO) & the Team handle the review well - A coordinated effort where the team works together with the PO - The team's preparedness, the way they take notes & timeboxing - There is no external interference

There should be no fear if the team does not meet some of the sprint goals. Yes, it's our goal, but it should be a regular practice to have changes. It's important for everyone to understand that it's better to have good quality and not just completing tasks for the sake of them being completed no matter what. Since we are working in an Agile environment, it's normal for businesses to adapt to the market or change their needs during a sprint.

Agility is about accepting changes better and faster. There is inherent trait in us to resist changes. This same behaviour permeates team dynamics as well. When someone is not adjusting well to the changes, they either become mute or overly critical. Sprint review can be an important place for finding openness of team to adapt to dynamics of change. Initial meetings of any team can be a little slow. A leader needs to see how the team become more and more vocal in a positive sense with each Sprint review meeting. No defined goal can measure this. It is more of a behavioural trait that a leader needs to assess.
