How do you recognize post-traumatic stress disorder in critical incident survivors?
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event, such as a natural disaster, a violent crime, a terrorist attack, or a serious accident. Critical incident survivors, such as first responders, military personnel, journalists, or humanitarian workers, may be at a higher risk of developing PTSD due to their frequent exposure to life-threatening or horrifying situations. However, not everyone who goes through a critical incident will develop PTSD, and some may experience resilience and post-traumatic growth instead. How can you recognize the signs and symptoms of PTSD in yourself or someone you care about? Here are some tips to help you identify and cope with this condition.
