How do you reach different audiences as an executive leader?

Defining your purpose isn't just about setting a goal, by clearly outlining what you want to achieve and the value you offer, you ensure your communication is focused, relevant, and building a trust. This targeted approach allows you to connect with each audience on their terms, addressing their specific concerns and motivating them to take action.

When considering each audience ask yourself these two questions: 1- What TANGIBLE outcomes do I want to achieve (e.g., what decisions or actions do I want the audience to take)? 2- What INTANGIBLE outcomes do I want to achieve (e.g., how do I want the audience to feel about the ideas shared and how do I want the interaction to impact the quality of our relationship)? Too often, people only focus on the "tangible" objectives while forgetting the all-important emotional side of influential communication.

Craft your communication with a specific action in mind, whether it's seeking feedback, driving engagement, or prompting decision-making, guiding your audience towards concrete steps that contribute to your shared objectives.

Adaptability is the hallmark of an exceptional executive leader. The most effective executives understand that a one-size-fits-all approach to communication is a recipe for failure. Executive leaders can masterfully adapt their tone and style to connect with diverse audiences and achieve their desired outcomes. An external investor session requires abbreviated key point messaging to drive home the value the company has delivered in the last quarter. Practice makes "better" and there is no need to veer off the path of your authentic communication style. If you are more colloquial in your speech, layering in expressions at a tradeshow opening remarks will feel authentic but if you are a formal speaker, no need to attempt to be a stand-up comedian during your sales kick-off meeting.

To reach different audiences, blend stories and data effectively. Stories captivate and humanize the message, helping listeners connect emotionally. Share anecdotes that reflect challenges you've faced and solved. Pair these with data that illustrates impact, showcasing your strategy's success and results. For executives, emphasize the strategic value in numbers. For managers, show how data supports efficient execution. Stories make data relatable, while data lends credibility to stories, creating a balanced narrative that resonates across all levels.

Data is the New Oil. But, stories move the world. So, the essential approach should be to weave stories and back them up with data to inspire a diverse audience.

For feedback and improvement, great leaders obsess about the art of listening. I use the 4 ways of listening by MIT management thinker Otto Scharmer. 1. Habitual Listening -> Listening on autopilot. You are reconfirming what you already know. You act reactively if something doesn’t affirm your own paradigm. 2. Factual Listening -> You suspend your usual habits of judgment to understand the facts of a situation. 3. Empathic Listening -> You put yourself in the shoes of the person you are listening to. Be open to opposing truths to allow ambiguity and gain perspective. 4. Generative Listening -> You become aware of emergent creativity. By listening deeply, you harvest the potential of a situation. How are you listening? 1, 2, 3, or 4?

Seeking feedback and continual development are critical for an executive leader looking to engage a variety of audiences. Create explicit communication channels through anonymous feedback, and regular check-ins. Conduct surveys, using polling and analytics tools. Create a culture of improvement through feedback loops and the Kaizen philosophy. Use benchmarking and advisory boards. Invest in personal development with training and coaching. Use a variety of communication tactics geared at different audiences. Monitor performance using KPIs, promote two-way communication, and be truthful and authentic. Act on feedback, train your team, and successfully use technology to integrate these principles into your leadership style.

Executives usually underestimate how little feedback they're getting. And just saying "please give me any feedback" seldom works. You have to go after feedback more intensively and thoughtfully, respond beautifully, and then take visible action. For example, ask a few truth-tellers ahead of time to let you know after what seemed to resonate, what didn't resonate, and what was missing. At the end of a presentation you might hand out a card (or use a quick anonymous survey if online), and ask people to let you know one thing that you heard that you most want to succeed and one question you still have. Then craft the next communication with this in mind and thank them for their help in focusing on the right issues.

A formalized feedback loop is important, whether it involves receiving rankings and ratings from the audience after an event, or directly asking clients how your remarks have helped them to solve a problem or change their perspective. Personally, I am most grateful when I receive LinkedIn messages and emails from participants who tell me how my stories and ideas have changed their lives, as it indicates that I have started a true ripple effect.

By actively listening and responding thoughtfully, leaders can demonstrate their commitment to inclusivity and collaboration.
