As a teacher in the performing arts and, as a department chair, I implemented the first program at the collegiate level for our university that supported our first legally blind dance major. We used collaboration between faculty, the student, and tried and true methods to mentor and support her. It was beautiful to watch her walk with her guide dog at graduation!

The golden rule of communication is critical when getting stakeholder buy-in to a teacher mentoring program: "Know your audience". This is especially true for the stakeholder that tend to need the most convincing: those who are funding it. First, keep in mind that they probably already see the value in teacher mentoring, but they have to make decisions about where to put the school's limited resources. So work to understand what they care about. Do they need to show test score improvements? If so, focus on data. Do they have a passion for a specific type of education (like the arts)? Then show how mentoring can make a huge difference in this area. Is there a possible grant to fund the mentoring? Then align with it's rubric.
