Once we've done a basic assessment to make sure the software meets regulatory standards, we can dig deeper into how it might impact things like safety, quality, and compliance (GxP impact) and how we're going to put it into action. This information helps us decide on the best methods for testing the software to make sure it works as it should.

Risk assessment and categorization is important and it should not be biased. There should be a define process of Risk assessment and categorization. You need to define the rules for how you are going to perform the risk management, because you want your whole organization to do it the same way with all software – the biggest problem with risk assessment happens if different parts of the organization perform it in different ways. Therefore, you need to define whether you want qualitative or quantitative risk assessment, which scales you will use for qualitative assessment, what the acceptable level of risk will be, etc.

Even the extent and formality of the risk assessment process should be based on risk. The first step should be to consider whether the system has a direct impact on patient safety or product quality and if any of the associated data is critical to these. Where the impact is direct more rigorous risk assessment should be performed. If the impact is not direct or none then it doesn't make sense to complete a detailed risk assessment as the risk will be low.
