Visibility is key. Most companies suffer from an up-to-date CMDB, whether they're using ServiceNow or a spreadsheet. You can't manage and risk assess what you can't see. Usually there is no single source of truth. Active Directory reports different count of assets from SCCM and other sources like endpoint protection or vulnerability scanning. If the device/server/VM onboarding process does not include installing the necessary agents and conversely removing them when decommissioning assets, then it becomes impossible to risk assess and prioritize mitigation efforts.

Put your money and time where you can get the most offensive/defensive and compliance value.
