How do you preserve library collections in different contexts?

1 Physical Preservation

Physical preservation refers to the actions and measures taken to protect the physical integrity and condition of library materials. This can include controlling the environment, such as temperature, humidity, light, and air quality; handling and storing materials properly, such as using acid-free boxes, folders, and sleeves; repairing and restoring damaged materials, such as binding, cleaning, and deacidification; and preventing and responding to disasters, such as fire, flood, and pest infestation. Physical preservation can also involve reformatting or digitizing materials that are fragile, deteriorating, or obsolete.

3 Cultural Preservation

Cultural preservation refers to the actions and measures taken to respect and protect the cultural values and significance of library materials. This can include consulting and collaborating with the communities and stakeholders that have a connection or interest in the materials, such as indigenous groups, ethnic minorities, and religious groups; acknowledging and addressing the ethical and legal issues related to the materials, such as ownership, access, and consent; and enhancing and promoting the cultural awareness and diversity of the materials, such as through education, outreach, and advocacy. Cultural preservation can also involve supporting and participating in the local and global preservation networks, such as UNESCO, IFLA, and ALA.

4 Historical Preservation

Historical preservation refers to the actions and measures taken to preserve the historical value and context of library materials. This can include identifying and documenting the provenance and significance of the materials, such as their origin, history, and relevance; organizing and describing the materials, such as using classification, cataloging, and finding aids; and providing and facilitating access to the materials, such as through reference, research, and exhibition. Historical preservation can also involve preserving the original order and arrangement of the materials, such as following the principle of respect des fonds.

5 Artistic Preservation

Artistic preservation refers to the actions and measures taken to preserve the artistic quality and expression of library materials. This can include recognizing and appreciating the aesthetic and creative aspects of the materials, such as their style, design, and technique; preserving and enhancing the visual and auditory features of the materials, such as their color, texture, and sound; and respecting and supporting the artistic intentions and rights of the creators and owners of the materials, such as their copyright, attribution, and moral rights. Artistic preservation can also involve displaying and showcasing the materials, such as through exhibitions, publications, and online platforms.

6 Scientific Preservation

Scientific preservation refers to the actions and measures taken to preserve the scientific accuracy and reliability of library materials. This can include verifying and updating the factual and theoretical information of the materials, such as their data, sources, and references; preserving and improving the functionality and usability of the materials, such as their software, hardware, and interfaces; and adhering and contributing to the scientific standards and methods of the materials, such as their protocols, formats, and metadata. Scientific preservation can also involve analyzing and evaluating the materials, such as through testing, reviewing, and peer-reviewing.
