Keep it short and to-the-point. This can be hard for a data report. One of the best (and easiest!) shifts I've ever made is simply re-titling my slide title to whatever the key takeaway is. For example, consider the following 2 slide titles/headers for the same slide... Before: "Financial trends over time" After: "Inpatient admissions for [xxxx] driving 30% of PMPM increase"

That's the kind of presentation people want to spend time hearing and engaging in.

In my experience, make it interesting. Get their attention right off. Usually in a group you can lose someone’s attention within the first 30 minutes. Make sure the idea is interactive. Don’t stray off track. Allow individuals to participate and ask questions. Don’t just read out of a book or from the screen understand your topic.

In my experience I work from the point I want to make and work down. While others build to the point they want to make, I tend to work backwards. Start with the point or change you want to make in the organization or market and then lean into to the data or KPIs that support the change from the biggest drivers to the smallest. Then forecast on what this positive change “will” bring to your market (money, volume, market recognition, education or staff development). Working with executives I’ve learned to get to the point sooner rather than later.
