This is absolutely true. The information must be tailored not only to the audience's profession but also to their level of BIM maturity. Do some preliminary research on your audience to determine their level of BIM expertise.

What I find helpful when giving classes about BIM to a very mixed audience is helping to explain the why and the interconnections. Usually I teach owners, planners and construction professionals working for civil or building projects. Because they are all different, I can't tailor to a particular group but to a common human need. This need is to understand and communicate. So when teaching I provide a platform for communication and discussions where people can talk about what they need to do their work. They learn to ask questions and to listen. As digitalization and BIM by extensions is a topic that touches the whole value chain, I think this approach is very helpful as it develops a "digital" mindset.

2 Choose the right format

The next step is to choose the right format for presenting BIM information. Depending on the purpose and context of your presentation, you may use different tools and platforms to convey your message. For example, you may use a 3D model, a 2D drawing, a spreadsheet, a report, a dashboard, a video, or a live demonstration. Knowing your audience will help you determine how much technical information they can take in without dozing off during the presentation. When planning your presentation, always keep your audience segment in mind. This way, You'll be able to relate to the audience better and be more entertaining as a result of this. And eventually you'll know more about the formats you should use for your presentation.

Choosing the right format is a very important step. When producing plans we needed to think about the audience and what to present on the plans. When working with BIM we often think just sending all the information is enough. The recipient will just filter it. But it depends on the recipients role. A owner rep or a site supervisor, does not have the time to click through ten different models and filter attributes to see what they need. So even with BIM, we need to prepare views that showcase what we want to show. That's why I think @Rob Snyder's idea of an enhanced BCF is so valuable.

Story telling is always a good idea! When teaching I like to start the storey when I first came into contact with BIM. 2007 in Abu Dhabi and we looked into optimizing our work for a twisted building. 2D autocad was at a limit. So we bought revit. And of course we failed with the introduction. Almost everybody can relate to this story, buying a software is not the first step..

The proposed steps of 1. Know your audience 2. Choose the right format 3. Use visual aids 4. Tell a story 5. Solicit feedback Are quite generic and in the wrong order. Knowing your audience is always a good idea. I would even add listening to the needs of the audience when you are already giving the presentation. And when adapt. So knowing the audience is continuous. The second point is to Tell Stories. Not a story and the format, the visual aids should support the story... So the story is not an afterthought but the beginning.
