For our medical device, we learned that the features requested by doctors varied from country to country, because in some countries, it was the specialist carrying out the procedure, while in others, it was the general doctors performing the procedure. Thus the procedural skill and experience level of the target users would vary from country to country, and we had to deliberately decide which set of users would benefit the most from our product. This guided us in the product requirements and features that we would have to incorporate to satisfy these specific users, ensuring that the skill level required for the product would be appropriate.

The third step is to design the solution for your product engineering project. Design is the process of creating the conceptual, logical, and physical models of your product that illustrate how it will look, work, and interact with the users and the environment. For example, we outsource manufacturing with a contract manufacturer, which we carefully select according to various factors including ISO certification (13485 in the case of medical devices), capabilities and pricing. The right partner can help to lower costs by offering suggestions for cheaper production materials and processes with their specific domain knowledge.
