One of the pitfalls that website owners often fall for is focusing on the wrong thing. Hosting companies put price and server specifications at the forefront of their products, but those aren't as important as they seem. I recently setup a new Virtual Private Server (VPS) with a new company I had never used before, only to realize that their server setup was blocking the mail() function of the PHP language. Why should you care? Because most website use WordPress and WordPress, out-of-the-box, uses the mail() function. And that's just one example. There are many. Checking what type of caching mechanism the server uses can save you hundreds of dollars in troubleshooting when your web designer tries to figure out why their changes don't show.

Additionally, you can compress files to significantly reduce their size. For example, in my case, I reduced the HTML file size from 600KB to about 60KB simply by using the Response Compression Middleware in .NET.

For those not deeply technical, WP Rocket is a solid plugin to handle many optimizations, though it might need some expert tweaking for best results. And good hosting? That's critical. Choose providers with solid caching, like Varnish, compression capabilities, and a server network or CDN that can serve your content fast, wherever your audience is.

While every effort should be made to optimise files and code during the build, caching and content delivery networks can add that extra boost, and in some cases help a poorly built site to perform much better. There are many options to improve speed, such as better servers, server side compression or plugins such as WP Rocket for WordPress. For WordPress sites we tend to host on Nginx, using a combination of compression and server cache, GZip, browser cache and Cloudflare for adding performance tools and use of their delivery network. Where we have adopted slow websites from customers migrating over, we’ve been able to perform significant speed improvements that have saved them from a costly rebuild.
