Actually I disagree. The first step is to assess your current value, not your current process. 1. Establish a baseline. Are you delivering value? How do you know? What are your metrics? 2. Define your goals. Do you want more engagement? Do you want more retention? Do you want more customer happiness? 3. Create a plan to achieve your goals. What needs to change? Do you need to improve quality? Do you need to improve outreach for requirements? Do you need better customer support?

This assumes you have an SDLC to begin with. You will get a different answer if you ask two people in the same organization to walk you through their SDLC. Start with the end in mind: business value. First, figure out what "business value" means in your organization. This will take much work. Value is only defined through the eyes of the customer. Ask questions to understand: 1) what job/task is your customer accomplishing with your product/service, 2) what pains does your customer experience when doing the job/task, 3) what gains your customer gets from your product/service as part of their job Once you know your organization's value proposition, use that as a baseline to verify if your future SDLC hypothesis is reasonable.

Today's SDLC is way more than the initial delivery of software. It must create feedback cycles that identify value-added change and when the software has no value for the consumer. The key idea of an SDLC is "lifecycle." Put the concepts of waterfall, agile, iterative, spiral, and hybrid aside. These concepts can prevent one from identifying the first principles of their lifecycle. The software lifecycle is all actions required to identify value, build, scale, and maintain a system from ideation until deprecation. Most of your cost to operate this software is not the upfront development. It's the change after the initial release. One must plan one's post-deployment capabilities just like one's pre-deployment capabilities.

While, waterfall suits projects requiring meticulous planning and documentation. One could even look at a combination of Waterfall + Agile. "Implementing Best Practices" often means blindly following others, without considering if it's suitable for your organization. Revisit your basic principles regarding software delivery for business value. State your assumptions clearly, such as "I/We assume [x] because [y]..." For instance, "We assume peer review of code changes is necessary before production because regulations mandate that the individual making a change cannot alone push it to production. This prevents internal threats from compromising customer data safety and security."

Think of your metrics in 2 buckets: Verification and Validation. Verification metrics demonstrate that you deliver software in the proper timespan, using no more than the allotted resources, meeting the requirements as designed, and that the software operates in production to handle the required loads. Validation metrics are those that measure if the delivered software relieves the customer's targeted pains and creates the expected gains for the customer. It's very easy for a team to fall into a "Build Trap" where they deliver much software in a very efficient manner, although the software does not provide value for the customers the business serves.

Monitoring and measuring results is essential for optimizing your SDLC. Utilize relevant metrics like time, cost, and quality to assess progress. Gather feedback from customers, stakeholders, and team members to evaluate impact. Sharing findings enables informed decision-making and continuous improvement. There is a difference between change for change's sake and experimentation. In general, your SDLC should be high-level enough that the SDLC itself changes as new general capabilities are required. The SDLC should constrain the implementation of your SDLC, and not the other way around. If you add or change the technology you build and deliver software, and this change necessitates a change to your SDLC, then you have a problem. SDLC capabilities should either be added or removed in conjunction with changes in the business value of the software you provide. There is a significant amount of noise in this space. Many companies confuse verification metrics with validation metrics in their SDLC, mistakenly believing it aids business when it might hinder value delivery. They have data for verification but lack validation data. Product management ideologies are crucial for a holistic SDLC. Software should pass through the SDLC only if it's a tested hypothesis, a validated feature proving business value, or a maintenance fix for system issues. A well-designed SDLC prioritizes customer experimentation. If your SDLC focuses solely on software development without incorporating user feedback, it will not align with your business strategy.

Taking a step back for moment, it's been my experience that SDLC is it's own methodology with 5 Phases: Planning, Analysis, Design, Construction/Development (includes Testing) and Implementation. Agile was originally developed by programmers who wanted to be nearer their actual end-customers on less complex development projects that could be quickly developed and deployed; however, strategy consulting firms took Agile and commercialized it for larger scale projects. Unfortunately, Agile is not suitable for larger scale projects for some industries particularly those will heavy regulation and/or regulatory oversight - think financial services (i.e., insurance, reinsurance, banking, etc.).

In my perspective the core objective of SDLC is to ensure end product built by Dev teams delivers the business value with which it was planned. One an choose any SDLC process Agile, waterfall, iterative or any other, we should just follow the basics - Regular Cadence for update\review of development process\product with all stakeholders - Maintain a feedback loop ensuring consistency along business value - Be transparent with Planning, scheduling and estimation - Well managed and accessible risk register - Know your customer and ensure customer centric decisions.

The "lifecycle" aspect of the SDLC is vital. Most teams overlook post-launch life, only addressing issues as they arise. To effectively build an SDLC supporting business value, you must clearly understand 1) your business's value to customers, 2) how your company earns revenue, and 3) the primary cost drivers. Design your SDLC with the end goal in mind, making it the central constraint. Avoid blindly imitating others' SDLC methods. If you find value in their approach, scrutinize their first-principles. Then, align these with your business value, ensuring your SDLC is tailored to achieve your end goal.
