How do you network effectively when recovering from job loss?

After you loose your job and want to build your network to find the right job reassessing your goals might give you more clarity. After I was being laid off first thing I done was to see what went wrong, what I can learn from that situation. After a thought, I decided which companies I need to target, what is the procedure I need to connect with people, what should contain in my introduction email and when I get the job, do I want to socialise or should I speak a lot most of the things I put focus on, preparing before every interview, preparing for right answers for expected questions asked in the interview. I designed my day to be 50% of the time I searched for jobs n applied and build network and another 50% regressing n learning skill.

One thing I’d recommend when attending a Business Networking event after losing a job, is to go with the right mindset. Don’t assume you’ll find or be offered a job. Instead, use the social event to make new connections, research companies and discover what your next career chapter will be.

Navigating job loss can be “an emotional roller coaster”, but is also an opportunity to refocus on what your goals ACTUALLY are and what type of life/lifestyle will be fulfilling for you (both personally and professionally). As you assess what your goals are, you can then begin to work backwards from that goal to create meaningful tasks that will get you to where you want to be. This step is critical and should not be overlooked because it’s sets the foundation of how you will define success for yourself in this transition as well as will determine how you spend your time. Even more, reassessing your goals can also be a liberating, cathartic exercise that allows you to find a new job as well as discover a deeper sense of your purpose!

Your life is bigger than any one role you may have lost or any role you hope to gain, so remember that your job is only part of your brand identity! It may be easier to think of yourself as your favorite clothing store/retailer. There may be specialty collections, seasonal items, and long term staples, but the brand and quality are usually the same across each of those products. Likewise, your personal brand transcends the job you have now, the one you may want in the future, or even the one that you didn’t see coming. Further, the first interaction with your brand nowadays is your digital presence (social media) and your written representation (CV/Resume, cover letter, etc.), so these should be consistent and the best quality possible!

Building a brand for yourself will keep you in the list of top candidates which employers looking to hire. After I lost my job, normally I prepared my resume, updated my linkedln with responsibilities for the current job. But whenever I submitted resume for open jobs I never received any response from recruiters. I reworked on my resume and adjusted my 5 pages resume to 2 pages resume and worked towards each detail mentioned like, recognition, achievement, additional skills, certifications. As I am from recruitment industry I focus my resume to talk about numbers. I also connected employers through linkedln and prepared an introductory email. I made sure my introductory email is not talking same thing as resume. I participated in events too

In my experience, regularly updating my LinkedIn profile and resume to reflect my latest achievements and skills has been crucial. I also added a professional photo and crafted a compelling summary that highlights my unique value proposition.

When you have lost a job it is scary but at the same time it is liberating for you to work on your own terms. This time is extremely crucial because with job search you will know the skills in demand and that can inturn help you learn those skills and identify a niche where you want to work. This will not only help you build your own brand but also help companies see you being a "Problem Solver" in crisis situations which is the top rated skills in demand by companies

After I lost my job, before I posted it on my Linkedln; I reached out to all my previous bosses and colleagues explaining my situation and I am open to work and if given a chance I can rejoin the firm if they have suitable employment. I send short messages about my exp, my salary and how soon I can join them. I also mentioned to share my resume within their contacts to explore opportunities. When I have put open to work status on linkedln, I have asked my previous colleagues to like and share the post on their linkedln so that my post reaches larger audience. This made my boss and colleagues to comment on my post and they recommended me to other employers by stating about my work and what benefit I can bring to the company if they hire me.

When In crisis we often tend to refrain from using our contacts overthinking that the answer will be a "clear no". Be vulnerable and open.Go ahead seek advice and help. This can speed up your job search and pour opportunities.

One time at work, a former colleague mentioned an open position at their company after I reached out for advice. Keeping in touch with your network and being honest about your job search can lead to unexpected opportunities.

After a layoff or job transition, it is common to experience a decline in interest of attending events. While I agree that there should be some time spent recouping and refocusing on what is important to the individual, I also believe that “putting yourself out there” is crucial to navigating through the transition period. There are so many opportunities you will not learn about, resources you may not discover, and people you will not meet if you stay to yourself and try to navigate this journey solo. You will reach your goals quicker if you have more information and points of reference for opportunities in the future - which can come from attending events! The more you learn what’s out there, the better decisions you usually will make!

I attended a virtual industry conference, and it turned out to be a great way to meet new contacts and learn about current trends. Having a prepared elevator pitch helped me introduce myself confidently.

Joining LinkedIn groups related to my industry has been very beneficial. Participating in discussions and sharing relevant articles helped me connect with professionals who later provided valuable job leads.

I started sharing industry insights and offering help with small projects to my network. This not only strengthened my relationships but also led to job recommendations from people who appreciated my assistance.

One silver lining to going through this experience is that it opens up a window of time where you can jump on board someone else’s train in the form of helping people you know promote their charitable causes and events. You provide a valuable resource in the form of your time and talents and it keeps you mixing it up with people you may not otherwise cross paths with. It creates some room for serendipity to happen and that may lead you to new opportunities.

Take a little time to do something you’ve been putting off. You’ll be surprised how quickly fresh perspectives open up and you begin to see life from different angles. Job loss can always open up new avenues, if you take action to expand your outlook.
