1 Respect diversity

One of the benefits of thought leadership is that it exposes you to different views and ideas from people who have expertise, experience, and insights in your domain. Instead of seeing this as a threat or a competition, you can embrace it as an opportunity to learn, grow, and collaborate. Respect the diversity of thought and expression among your peers, and acknowledge their contributions and perspectives. Avoid personal attacks, straw man arguments, or ad hominem fallacies that undermine the quality of the dialogue.

Respecting diversity doesn't just mean being "nice" to one another. It also is rooted in seeking ways to educate yourselves on the communities you engage with in your organization. What historical barriers limit their voices and potentially impact their contributions? A thought leader needs to understand who has a voice that is limited or who does not. As leaders, we often don't look beyond the current circumstances for the context clues that give us a much fuller picture. Implicit bias can play a role in whose opinion we value more or who gets access to specific opportunities. It is important to do your own self-audit to seek insight into how your own biases may have impacted your decision-making. We can work to interrupt our own bias.

2 Seek common ground

While you may disagree with some of the opinions or approaches of other thought leaders, you can still find some common ground that connects you. For example, you may share the same values, goals, problems, or interests that relate to your field. You can use these as a basis to build rapport, trust, and understanding with them. You can also look for ways to complement or support each other's work, such as by cross-referencing, co-creating, or co-promoting content, products, or services.

Learning other people's values is a great way to seek common ground and understanding. The way in which we approach problems, projects, or goals may be different, but the discussion of values can help answer the "why". Understanding the "why" helps to build trust with colleagues. Co-creating and giving proper credit is essential to building sustainable working relationships. Have people answer the question, "I work best work best when my colleagues do this...?". This will help shine a light on how other people want to be treated vs. how you want to treat them. Understand that people share in all different kinds of ways and allow the opportunity for that. Provide the chance for others to give anonymous feedback as you begin to build trust.

3 Be open-minded

Being a thought leader doesn't mean you have all the answers or that you are always right. It means you are willing to explore, question, and challenge your own assumptions and beliefs, as well as those of others. You are open to feedback, criticism, and new information that can help you improve your knowledge, skills, and impact. You are also humble enough to admit your mistakes, limitations, and biases, and to learn from them. Being open-minded allows you to grow as a thought leader and as a person.
