The best way to deal with those situations is to be respectful to the student and explain the reason why he/she got this grade. Providing feedback is essential for students to understand and also learn from their mistakes. Further, we as educators use many rubrics and those typically provide the essential criteria for a pass/merit/distinction. However, as we all know, many students do not understand them so we need to 'translate' them so they can actually understand what has gone wrong. Last but not least, we should also highlight areas of strengths and not focus solely on the weaker parts of the work.
