How do you navigate conflicting design preferences with a designer to achieve the best 3D printing outcomes?

Usually, when there's a conflict with a co-worker I tend to put things in the form of pros and cons of each of our ideas or suggestions. by seeing in front of us the strengths and weaknesses of each solution, we can see if there is a stronger design or if we can combine our designs in a way that will keep both ideas' strengths. 9/10 This method will resolve the issue or conflict. However, when the pros and cons are not much different or there is no possible solution that could combine the 2 ideas, I go for a test run. we print both ideas in the exact way we plan to do so in the final product, and we test them out ourselves and let other neutral people in this conflict express their opinions. Then you can see and feel which solution is best.

In cases of 100% farming out of 3D printing, a designer versed in multiple technology DfAMs has the final say as what would be 3D printed. Two quick examples: 1. A DLP part with integrated U-shaped leaf springs, where the free end of the spring comes back closely to the part’s body. The 3D print house recommended connecting the free end of the spring to the body of the part via a thin feature that would need to be broken before the part’s use. I did approve that. 2. An FFF part & same-material supports with multiple 1/2” square ventilation openings on the part’s sides. The 3D print house recommended that the square openings would be rotated 45 degrees to avoid supports there. Not approved as that would wreck the intended appearance.

To avoid the conflicts: First of all, Designer has to go through the DFAM(design of Additive manufacturing) course or open source documentations are widely available. This will enables the designer to understand the various design constrains or failure modes or set backs in geometries and considering tolerances for holes and dimensional tolerances etc. Deep diving into the materials properties as well-as application of the part before selecting material will avoid the failures in the field. Designers also have to clearly explain the load parameters like direction of load acting, magnitude of load and etc and operating conditions like working temp, expose to any chemicals, electrically exposed.
