How do you motivate and engage the training participants and clients in a training project?

For things you must do when beginning a training cohort: 1. Understand customer's intent for the training. 2. Assess where they are at in their current knowledge and performance. 3. Tailor curriculum as necessary. 4. Begin training. Every time my team starts training a new cohort, the first lesson isn't a lesson. It's an assessment of where our trainees are at in their current knowledge and performance. This way we have an idea of which areas may require greater emphasis later on in the curriculum. It's also important to understand the customer's intent for the training. Not all customers want the same things and some may require special emphasis in certain area.

Before designing and delivering any training project, it's crucial to understand the needs and expectations of participants and clients. Use methods such as surveys, interviews, focus groups, or pre-tests to gather information on their current knowledge, skills, goals, challenges, preferences, and motivations. This helps tailor the training content, methods, and activities to meet their specific requirements and interests, ensuring the training project is valuable and relevant to them.

Knowledge is often tied to years of experience and I'll often start with the most absurd number such as, " please stand up if you've been in the career field less than a month." Ask participants to take note of anyone sitting and be sure to touch base and support them (this prevents singling them out in front of all). Gradually increase the experience until only a few standing. Take note of where the majority starts to sit down as a means to gauge knowledge to move forward. As the last few stand, i make few notes on my note card on items to perhaps sprint through.

remember that training/ learning involves change and, regardless of the dialogue, we tend to be inherently change resistant (despite our best intentions) - be mindful of the change landscape as you evaluate needs and expectations, as that will impact both delivery and outcome. In the time between arriving and starting I have ways for them to share scenarios that relate to the topic that they'd like to address. In the beginning, I share a memorable story that shows I once was where they were as far as knowledge content goes to help them connect with me and me with them. As we move through, I invite feedback from others as there are always multiple ways to address scenarios. In large group settings, I offer time for them to share at own tables to allow the shyer ones an opportunity to share as well.

Allow those mistakes to be made in a controlled training environment by giving ownership and decision-making power to the trainees. This will give them the experience of potentially making mistakes before they step out in the real world.

As a result, the training may be fine-tuned over time to keep it fresh and useful for both participants and clients.
