1 Define success criteria

Before you can measure your machine learning team's success, you need to define what success means for your project and your organization. Depending on the nature and scope of your machine learning problem, you may have different success criteria, such as accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, ROC curve, AUC, or other metrics that capture the quality and performance of your model. However, these technical metrics are not enough to evaluate the business impact and value of your machine learning solution. You also need to consider how your model aligns with the business goals, such as revenue, cost, customer satisfaction, retention, or other key performance indicators (KPIs) that reflect the desired outcomes and benefits of your machine learning project.

Defining what constitutes success can differ between Team X and Team Y, especially in the context of Machine Learning (ML) products. We all understand that technical metrics are crucial for evaluating an ML model's performance, and these metrics are universally applied to most ML products. But remember, even if a model is really accurate in your testing environment, it might not actually succeed in the real world. I recommend incorporating market criteria for success by tracking how well your model aligns with existing market regulations, the number of users or test pilots done and use cases, evaluating the impact of your model, and what your target says about your ML product. Build to win your target.

Other Success Metrics to Consider Includes Training and Inference Time: The time it takes to train a model and make predictions. Faster is usually better, especially for real-time applications. Model Complexity: Simpler models are often preferred as they are easier to interpret and less prone to overfitting. Return on Investment (ROI): The financial benefit derived from the ML solution compared to the cost of developing and maintaining it. User Engagement and Satisfaction: Especially for consumer-facing applications, user feedback and engagement levels can be a measure of success. Incident Rate: The frequency of issues or incidents after deploying models.

Once you have defined your success criteria, you need to track and communicate your team's progress towards achieving them. Tracking progress means collecting and analyzing data that shows how your model is performing on various metrics, such as training, validation, testing, and production data.
