Surveys are a tax on the organization, redirecting energy from the important work of building the product and growing the company. If you use surveys, make them short and direct, and show the team the actions you are taking as a result to reinforce a culture of growth, not bureaucracy.

Although it's super important to ensure your team is aligned with the company's vision and mission, I would caution that a survey -- especially one executed in the most traditional manner of a document with questions and answers -- invites its own issues, biases and may impact team morale. Yes, if you manage a large team or department that's spread across a large area and brings together a mix of in-office and remote employees across time zones, countries, cultures, etc. then a formal digital survey may* help align your team and/or give you insight on how to better align your team. However, there's an opportunity to connect, engage and rally people by interacting with them directly -- either one on one, or in a casual setting.

In order to measure the success of aligning your Team with your company’s vision & mission is to first get yourself aligned to your employees aspirations, understand each Team member in depth not just professionally but personally as well, understand their strengths, their support areas, their aspirations, their families, their ethnicity & respect their background as an ongoing thing. Your team will always have objectives derived from the higher goals of the organisation, department and or project. At the beginning of the year there will be agreed targets derived from the strategic objectives of the department and organisation. From experience an appraisal is conducted semi and annually to evaluate performance. For me it's during these meetings with my team that alignment is performed and measured. Any departures from agreed objectives are discussed and their causes identified. Action plans identified to address anything including, absentism, apathy, cultural issues. An overall good score for my team is a good indicator that we are aligned with the mission and vision of the organisation.

Additionally, I don't want to avoid the possibility that an employee, coworker or team member may help you realign your vision to match the organization's. Your team is comprised of potentially brilliant, talented and engaged individuals -- and they may be the resource you need to rekindle the fire in your heart for "the cause". I worked for an organization with an "altruistic" cause, and regular interactions and conversations around this cause kept us all engaged with one another, and allowed for productive discourse.

You will always find common ground, or should at least go out your way to square the circle. Anecdotally, I've seen too many teams where a team lead perceives themselves only as a part of the team's cutlure when it's inherently "good" and rarely when it's inherently "bad". FACT: You can have a great organizational mission and vision with a s*** corporate culture. These are not co-dependent elements. Create the culture your aspire to have.

In a previous role, my employer had weekly meetings that were broadcast for the organization. Some were more formal, exploring quarterly performance.
