1 Define your objectives and metrics

To measure and report the effectiveness of your data breach response and notification process, it is necessary to define objectives and metrics. I’ve observed that during a breach, the focus often shifts to technical and compliance aspects, overshadowing critical areas like stakeholder satisfaction, trust retention, and post-incident perception. I empathize with this, having been in the position of rushing to address technical issues and sidelining clear communication, assuming stakeholders would understand, or fearing too much information might cause panic. However, my experience has also taught me that prioritizing trust and transparent communication leads to more effective recovery. It’s ultimately about people, not just technical issues. So, alongside technical KPIs, I strongly recommend giving these objectives equal importance when defining metrics.
