Un ejemplo práctico es utilizar software de gestión ambiental para rastrear y optimizar el manejo de residuos en tiempo real.

Establishing a baseline reading of your waste situation is essential in reducing it because, to paraphrase Peter Drucker, you can't improve what you can't measure. A Gemba walk of your facility, or an accurate count of scrap, or even a tally of the number of warranty claims is an excellent place to start. After that, run a Pareto analysis to identify the biggest source of waste and analyze the root cause of it.

A hierarchical process map is created by the process team. This enables one to find all the "usese" and "losses" of resources. I wrote the USEPA's manual, "An Organizational Guide to Pollution Prevention" (2002). I have also published a book, "Making the Business Case for EHS" that won the APEX Award for the best how-to book published in 2006. In addition to these books, I have published about 100 journal articles that show how to work with the workers to create, verify, and use this method. It even works with lean and six sigma projects. I have conducted hundreds of training programs using these tools in all ten US EPA regions in the US and in many countries around the world. They have also been used in my teaching at Harvard University.

In addition to setting specific waste reduction goals and targets, the plan should emphasize employee engagement and training initiatives to foster a culture of waste consciousness and accountability. Furthermore, it can incorporate elements such as supplier engagement strategies, waste diversion programs, and innovation initiatives aimed at implementing sustainable practices and technologies. Regular reviews and updates to the plan ensure adaptability to evolving waste management challenges and opportunities, reinforcing the organization's commitment to environmental stewardship and resource efficiency.

The information gathered using the methods that I have developed (see Waste Audit section above), use the knowledge of the workers and leaders in a facility or even a supply chain to create a waste reduction program. As I mentioned before, I have more than 50 published papers that describe the foundation for creating a waste reduction program once the waste audit program is in place. By using a proven hierarchical process mapping tool, the workers creating their own sections can see how their work affects other work in the facility as well as showing how the supply chain members are interacting with these important elements. I have won the Canadian Pollution Prevention Award as well as the P2 Prevention Technology award in the US.

I spent more than one-half of my career helping companies create waste reduction plans. I have published papers on each of the topics that are mentioned above. The program "tools" for each area are described in the papers that I have prepared. Some of the efforts that have used this involve citizens suits and enforcement negotiations for violations of the rules and regulations of the governmental agencies involved. When I served as an "expert witness" on an industrial accident, I can use my published methods to make a difficult topic easier to understand by a public official, judge, or other authoritative person (e.g plant manager, CEO, etc.

A key aspect to enhance in a waste reduction plan is the integration of specific KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) linked to each element of the plan. For instance, tying specific metrics to the waste reduction targets and actions can not only track progress more effectively but also motivate team members by visualizing impact. Additionally, involving cross-functional teams in developing these KPIs can ensure alignment across the organization and foster a culture of collective responsibility and engagement in waste reduction efforts.

The pollution prevention/waste reduction publications have specific tools that are used in each phase of the effort: hierachical process mapping, resource accounting, determining the cost of the loss, selecting P2 Opportunities,analyzing the root causes, generating alternative solutions, selecting an alternative for implementation and creating an action plan for the project and the results. I also add a program for determining the "lessons learned" in these efforts.
