Do some research into the career paths available in the country you're working in - Linkedin is a great place to do this! Common educational pathways and routes into the workplace may be different than in your country of origin. Taking some time to understand your map out the available career options will help you define your career goals. I spent 7 years working in Italy and found that much more emphasis was placed on degree subject and grade than in the UK. Realising this is what pushed me to complete a masters in my preferred field to support my continued career progression.

Wherever in the world you're working, you'll find professional networking groups to suit a range of interests, e.g. professional women, working expats, etc. Even if you're the kind of person who thinks they hate networking, just try going along to one free event - at the very least you'll often get a free drink out of it! They can be a fantastic place to build your network of contacts and to make friends. When I was living in Rome, I came across many expats who found both housing and work opportunities in this way.

Whether you're living abroad to work remotely for a company based at home, or you're moving abroad to forge the next stage of your career in a new country, be prepared to occasionally feel lonely. It's par for the course and I think even the most resilient person can struggle at times. Make use of the tools available to keep in touch with your existing friends and to make new contacts, say yes to networking and social events, even if they might not be what you'd do at home, and keep an open mind. The benefits of exploring a new way of life greatly outweigh the discomfort of occasional homesickness!
