Additionally, it is useful to think about how that possible Partner will be better off for having collaborated with you. What's in it for them and what they care about? My needs don't motivate anyone, so I want to understand what will make them "want" to collaborate. This can include how the Customer of your collaboration is going to be better off or how much fun can be had doing something this impactful. People engage for a lot of reasons and I want to make it as easy as possible for them to imagine working with me toward a worthwhile end.

Generally, I set an outcome and pitch the outcome. Knowing what you are workign to accomplish and why it matters can make quick work of determining interests and compatability. I can easily imagine asking to collaborate on the design of a project to collaborate on! This gives my Target Partner inclusion and a vote what we will do and how we might go about accomplishing it.
