2 What are the main indicators of environmental impact?

When measuring the environmental impact of your construction project, there are many indicators to consider. Energy use, water use, waste generation, and material use are some of the most relevant and common ones. Energy use can be measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh), British thermal units (BTU), or carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e). Water use can be measured in liters, gallons, or cubic meters. Waste generation can be measured in kilograms, pounds, or tons. And material use can be measured in kilograms, pounds, or tons, or by using indicators such as the Global Warming Potential (GWP), the Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP), or the Acidification Potential (AP). Understanding these indicators can help you assess the environmental impact of your project and make informed decisions about how to reduce it.

Sustainability rating systems are good sources of well researched applicable KPIs. The rating system will vary by project type and country. LEED, Envision, BREEAM, ISCA, WEDG, SITES. Every project would benefit from having a qualified sustainability coordinator on both the design and the construction teams. And the owner team too. A key role of the sustainability coordinators is to collaborate & guide weaving sustainable solutions seamlessly into the contributions of all team members. A blend of both technical and communications skills.

Environmental impacts come in many guises, particularly in the day-to-day operations of a construction project. In my experience, dust and noise are the two main factors that we need to control, not just for the project and the immediate environment but also for the neighbouring areas that will be affected. Simply put, how can we reduce the day-to-day impacts of our construction activities? Thats a good start . . .

4 How do you improve your environmental performance?

Measuring the environmental impact of your construction is not enough; you also need to take action to improve it. To reduce your environmental footprint, you should design for efficiency, choose low-impact materials, implement green technologies, and adopt waste management practices. Applying principles of passive design, such as orientation, insulation, shading, ventilation, and daylighting can help minimize energy and water demand. Selecting materials with low embodied energy, high recycled content, low toxicity and long durability can help reduce the environmental impact. Installing systems and devices that use renewable energy sources can reduce the reliance on fossil fuels. Applying the hierarchy of waste prevention, reduction, reuse, recycling and disposal can minimize waste generation and maximize resource recovery. Segregating, sorting and storing waste properly can facilitate collection and treatment.

Through the use of KPIs (Key Performance Indicators), by educating those directly and indirectly involved, and by doing the right thing, at the right time (pre and post-planning). This forms the right attitudes to environmental stress and provides a baseline that can be adapted and changed to suit the needs of the project as a whole. It also instills accountability for doing the right thing.

Measuring and improving the environmental impact of your construction is not only beneficial for the environment, but also for your business. To reap the full benefits, it’s important to communicate your environmental impact effectively to clients, stakeholders, and the public. Utilizing environmental labels and certifications can help differentiate yourself from competitors, and increase credibility and trustworthiness. Examples include Energy Star, WaterSense, FSC, or Cradle to Cradle. Additionally, creating environmental reports and stories can demonstrate transparency and accountability, as well as highlight values and vision. Formats include sustainability reports, case studies, or infographics. Lastly, engaging with your audience by providing information, feedback, or opportunities for participation can help build relationships and loyalty, as well as foster a culture of sustainability. Channels of engagement include social media, newsletters, blogs, or events.
