1 Data security maturity model

A data security maturity model is a framework that defines the characteristics and capabilities of different stages of data security evolution, from the most basic to the most advanced. A data security maturity model can help organizations assess their current state, set their goals, and plan their improvement initiatives. There are various data security maturity models available, such as the Data Security Capability Maturity Model (DSCMM) by the Data Security Council of India, or the Data Security and Privacy Maturity Model (DSPMM) by the International Association of Privacy Professionals. These models typically consist of several domains, such as data governance, data protection, data breach response, data privacy, and data compliance, and each domain has several levels of maturity, such as initial, repeatable, defined, managed, and optimized.

It is important to define the goals in the multiple stages of the data security maturity model. In my experience, the ultimate goal of the data security maturity model needs to be: to enable data sharing across the organization in a secure and governed manner - such that every employee gets access to the right data at the right time, to leverage the data to make data-driven decisions, meet the organization's business objectives, while staying compliant to internal and external regulations.

A data security maturity report is a document that summarizes and communicates the results and findings of a data security maturity assessment and metrics. This type of report can be useful for an organization to showcase its data security achievements and challenges, provide recommendations and action plans for further improvement, engage and align its data security stakeholders and partners, and demonstrate its commitment and accountability to data security. Such a report should include an executive summary highlighting the main points and conclusions, a data security maturity profile showing the organization's current state and target state, a gap analysis identifying the gaps and risks between the current state and target state, a roadmap outlining the steps and resources needed to close the gaps and mitigate the risks, as well as a dashboard displaying the data security maturity metrics and trends.

Data security maturity improvement is the process of implementing and sustaining the data security maturity roadmap and action plans. This process can help an organization achieve its data security goals and objectives, as well as enhance its data security capabilities and performance. To effectively carry out this improvement, there needs to be a data security maturity champion who leads and coordinates the initiatives, a data security maturity team who supports and executes the activities, a data security maturity culture which fosters and promotes the values and behaviors, and a data security maturity feedback loop which collects and analyzes the data security maturity data and feedback, then adjusts the plans and actions accordingly.
