How do you match video pace and rhythm to music or sound design?

I have always gone with what produces the emotions I want to convey in a scene and the overall film. I first cut together the scenes and the film as a whole, then I look for music that helps convey and further develop those emotions. when I find music that seems right, I use stems to adjust how the musics flows. Where just editing the music stems doesn't quite fit into what the scene is saying, I adjust the visual elements of the scene to better fit with the music where possible. Sound design is a dance that requires careful movement of both audio and visual elements to make the emotional tone of the scene and film come alive.

Creating a seamless connection between video pace and music/sound design is key to an engaging audiovisual experience. When I work in a scene where people are having some conversations and I need to work with OTS and master shots, I arrange the shots as per the dialogues, then I add cut ins. Now after this to maintain the pace and rhythm of the scene I watch the scene without sound. Then I got to know the pacing of the scene, and could understand where the shots are getting dragged or moved too fast on the scene. According to that I start designing the storytelling, of course I keep the mood of the scene in place.

Once the overall idea of the story or message that needs to be told is clear, a quick overview of the raw video footage leads the way for exploring a possible range of tones and rhythms for the clip. With these moods in mind, then comes the music selection, which is essentially a gut-oriented thing: certain music will naturally feel perfect for those visuals and story. Finally, the editing process itself will be molding that rough footage around the music to get an organic audio+visual storytelling piece.

Even once you have a good edit, be prepared to add or remove frames... the music needs to flow and can sometimes guide the edits. There's two approaches - sometimes it's effective to contrast the pace of the action with the music - imagine watching the tussle and bustle of the morning rush hour in London Underground accompanied by a soaring Aria. Or a slo motion montage on a beach with a pulsing soundtrack. For dialogue, I go mood or pause the rhythm and maybe a cheeky key change before going back into it by adding the rhythm and reverting to the original key.

Unless the video or film is about music or is of the experimental kind, the aspiration is that one's video should be written well and shot well such that music is but a sound effect. It adds value to the viewing experience. The writing and images should do the work.

Additionally, another things to analyze is how well the music matches the voiceover if there is one. The tempo might be upbeat, and the overall vibe might be energizing, but if the voice is chill, it'll throw off the vibe. I do most of my own voiceovers. My voice is cozy no matter how much I project and insert inflections. Certain tunes just don't mesh well. Not saying I can't have upbeat tunes, but I just have to pick the right ones. So, don't forget the voiceover while you're analyzing the sound design.

I'm a "music first" kind of editor. When not working with a composer who can write music to the visuals, my strategy is to find the right piece of music before attempting a final edit. It may take some time to find it but it is time well spent. I seek music that already has the emotional ups and downs that I know I will need for the section. That doesn't mean I won't have to edit the music itself, shortening or lengthening sections as needed, but finding the piece that feels right FIRST can often make the visual editing much easier for me. However, when working with an "edit first" kind of director I may have to be able to work in reverse of my normal methods. You have to be flexible.

It’s also important to add bookmarks at the beats on the audio waveform so you can edit to those cuts. It’s not just about making action match the music, but editing so that it flows with the music and doesn’t distract.

I use a plugin that creates a shape layer with markers at measures and keyframes on down beats. It makes it sooooo much easier to edit to the music. Without it there's too much back and forth to make sure you got the timing right. Also speed ramping and slow motion are your best friends!

When I'm editing to match music, I like to mark my beats manually first. Learn the keyboard shortcut to place markers on your timeline, then play the music track and tap that keyboard shortcut in time with the beat. I like this technique because it's more likely to mark the beats in the music that move me the most. Once you have your markers placed, you can line your cuts up to them.

Fades are perhaps among the most straightforward transitions, yet they can convey an air of elegance when applied appropriately. In contrast, more advanced transitions might sometimes appear overly complex or ostentatious. One nuanced technique that I love to employ to add a touch of class to fades is the introduction of a slight gaussian blur. As elements blur when fading out and unblur when fading in. Creative effects should be just that...effects. If you find yourself flooding your video with them to "make it look better," you messed up somewhere along the way. Probably in planning your shots. Creative effects should be supporting actors not the main character. They should make sense and add to the mood not detract. You should also be consistent and use the same one throughout. Using 14 different types of transitions in one 2 minute video is very gimmicky and shows a lack of experience.

First, when adding music to your videos, you don't always just want to drop it and leave it. You can pick the best parts of the song and blend them together by cutting on the beat and transitioning with constant gain (Premiere Pro). Secondly, be strategic about the placement of certain parts of the song. Inspiring moments should be complemented by the climactic part of the music, exciting moments should have energetic music, etc. Follow the feel and pick music that is a compliment to that.

Music helps encapsulate a moment in your video, and you can't get too married to one song for too long. People need to see progress to stay longer as a viewer. Keep your pace moving forward by adding various music transitions to help tonal shifts take place in your video. The trick is to find that segue so that your video has a natural rhythm. If your video is a band, visuals are your lead singer, and music is your drummer. Music and sound are the backbone of your video. All the other parts solely rely on it. Just like a drummer playing out of rhythm can completely ruin the melody, a misplaced song can suck the viewer out of the experience.

It's very rare that you will find music that fits the exact length of your video, especially ones that are longer than 3 minutes. You will often need to loop a track. That does not mean laying the music multiple times on the timeline. That will create very abrupt transitions in audio and destroy the overall vibe. Use audio editing software to find a good part to cut out and loop. This is the part you lay multiple times. At the end, you can extend the track to the end of the timeline and fade out.
