Creating a shared vision is one of the key foundations of defining strategy. Accepting that the road ahead will be twisty is given, however ensuring the journey will have the necessary stakeholders with each playing their part is also key. Last but not the least is that defining strategy is not good enough there has to be a robust execution plan.

Customer-centricity is the cornerstone to success as a strategist. Many folks can do execution, orchestration, or management well. But few make time to listen to the voice of the customer. Their needs and wants. Take those and align them to customer solutions and then, create value.

Some of the ways to get started is asking a lot of questions around the industry your organisation operates in. Learn from industry leaders who have deeper insights to the industry. This helps you get a better understanding of the industry, its challenges and further helps you to determine the kind of impact that you can have.

A strategic planner needs to detect and comprehend changes ahead of the planner's clients. Background knowledge, experiences acquired over many years, and a close network allow the strategic planner to understand the context and interpret the new changes more accurately.

Strategy has a purpose, which is to ensure that the defined purpose of the organization is achieved. The more defined and refined the purpose is, the easier it is to build a strategy or strategies to support the stated goal. Everything an organization does, from hiring employees to developing systems and growing market share, is based on a vision that has a stated purpose. Most challenges result from not having a well-defined purpose for the organization; overcome this obstacle to master the challenges of a strategic role.

One thing to add here is that in a strategic role your impact may end at providing a recommendation and influencing leaders to go a certain direction, but never taking the recommendation to actual output. Hence, you get to see very little of how the actual ops work.

As you move higher up in organizations, management gives way to strategy. You have to challenge the status quo and expectations. You have to look where everyone else ISN'T looking and identify opportunities, gaps, and weaknesses. You have to look at the executive goals of the organization and find optimal ways to create value. Once you see the opportunities, then execute with rigor.

This is the key problem-solving stage, where you as a strategist can do a bunch of things: - bring in an outside in view - speak to experts within and outside the organization to understand gaps, white spaces to play in etc. - come up with options / recommendations and in most cases, a proper prioritization framework to think through the options generated. Before this, a good strategist would be able to generate hypothesis and test them through a variety of qualitative and quantitative analysis.

Being strategic certainly means putting a stake in the ground and executing. But, it's also extremely important to get stakeholders involved early and often. Get commitment. Create a vision. And lead with transparency.

The 'Why' you choose a specific direction is the most important. So any choice / recommendation / direction, needs to be backed by proper rationale.

'Option Paralysis' is real. And I firmly believe that a well-defined strategy is imperative for avoiding it and achieving personal and professional success. While getting all teams and stakeholders agree it is important to use the WIFIM approach, it is abbreviation for What’s In It For me approach . Meaning you should try and communicate your desire looking in the other’s benefits out of your idea so you will get the commitment for the long term and out of their own internal motivation

Execution is the most important part of any strategy. Implementation requires the person to not only have a clearer vision of what needs to be achieved but also various collaterals involved in it to make it a success. Most people I have worked with have a solid roadmap plan to execute their strategies along with the stakeholders involved, individual owners, key decision making areas etc.

It is critical to never stop learning and never lose your curiosity. Strategic roles require leveraging the past and present to chart a path to the future. By staying curious and always seeking to learn more we are better prepared to be the advocates for the future and stepping into the unknown.

In my experience, learning and improving is most effective when done closely with partners and customers. Proactive listening and continuous engagement will deepen your insights and maximize the value delivered along the customer value loop. Simple questions to learn, ask feedback and feedforward during evaluations with customers could be the following: What added value do our (concept) solutions bring to the customers? How can we use (early) evidence to increase the value to generate? How can we fulfill the needs even better?

In a strategic role, data is your compass. Analyzing data helps uncover insights, validate assumptions, and guide decision-making. I believe strategic leaders leverage data to identify emerging patterns, assess risks, and align their strategies with measurable outcomes. In a strategic role, you are accountable for the results of your decisions. Data-driven decisions provide clear benchmarks for measuring outcomes. Whether it's monitoring the progress of a new market entry or assessing the performance of a product launch, data offers tangible metrics that quantify success and facilitate informed course corrections if needed.

Empathy; curate a deep understanding of the human core, the key to any strategy is to understand, appreciate and inculcate the motivations, needs, drivers, and fears of those who the strategy will serve, those whom it will impact and influence. Also remember that Strategy must catalyze the intended outcome. A successful strategy is measured by the impact it creates and the outcome it precipitates
