Planning backward is okay if there is a clear defined end point to the PBL. However, there may not be. No matter the age of student from elementary to adults, there could be a required physical output for a project, but there could also be an endless array of potential solutions for discussion. When helping students organize and direct their focus on the project, consider this and always start with the gather and analyze background info stage. Make sure students have a clear understanding of what the end product must be, and help them lay out the steps needed to get there. Working backward may sound good, but it doesn't help in all situations.

3 Choose relevant and engaging topics and contexts

One of the key elements of PBL is to provide your students with authentic, real-world problems and challenges that connect to their interests, passions, and experiences. How do you choose relevant and engaging topics and contexts for your project? You can start by brainstorming with your students, colleagues, or community partners. What are some of the questions or inquiries that your students have? How are your students progressing and performing in your project? What are their strengths and challenges? What are their questions and suggestions? How can you improve your project design, implementation, or assessment? Adapting and adjusting as needed will help you meet your students' diverse needs, address any issues or obstacles, and improve your project quality and impact.

No matter the age of students engaged in PBL, a common issue is students struggling to get going with the problem. This usually arise from having a problem scenario that is too broad. If an educator finds a group, or the majority of students in a group, are struggling to get started or at any point in the PBL process, then the initial problem should be reevaluated and narrowed. An educator wants their students to tackle a meaningful problem, but exactly the scope of that can change. A key learning goal in all PBL is the process of tackling a problem.
