1 Define clear expectations

You can create a rubric, a checklist, or a scoring guide to communicate the criteria and standards for each learning contract. You can also use a contract agreement form, where students write their name, their learning goal, the tasks they will complete, the resources they will use, and the due date. This form helps students to commit to their learning contract and to track their progress.

Backward mapping, scoping, pathways, self-paced learning, & mastery grading (including simple rubrics) provide differentiation & increase student ownership and autonomy. Tools like Canvas & Google Classroom can organize this approach…any clear folder structure (electronic, hard copy, or hybrid) for keeping upcoming & completed assignments can work. Students follow a Teacher’s structure. Teachers can create more opportunity to enhance learning through a flipped model, and increase their knowledge of students’ ability and progress. Teacher’s work is done up front. And, as learning progresses, teachers are facilitators rather than whole class instructors. The best training I’ve seen to support this approach is @ModernClassroomsProject.

2 Provide a variety of options

One of the benefits of learning contracts is that they allow students to choose from a range of options that suit their learning preferences, styles, and needs. A couple of years ago, I tried a different way of creating learning contracts with my students. I asked them to create a vision board. We typically read and hear about vision boards in relationship with personal development or professional growth. I asked students to visualize their learning progression and "see" what they needed to do to achieve various levels of performance. I then asked them to create a vision board to illustrate where they saw themselves and what they wanted to accomplish. They used images, words, quotes, and a lot of creative thinking to create their vision boards. The result was amazing! Not only did students engage with the process, but their creative boards became a source of pride, sharing, and accomplishments.

3 Organize the materials and resources

To make sure that your students have access to the materials and resources they need for their learning contracts, you need to organize them in a way that is easy to find, use, and return. You can use bins, folders, baskets, or boxes to store and label the materials and resources for each learning contract. You can also create a sign-out sheet, where students write their name, the date, and the materials or resources they borrow and return. This helps you to keep track of the inventory and to avoid losing or damaging the materials and resources.

4 Monitor and support the students

While your students are working on their learning contracts, you need to monitor and support them regularly and consistently. You can use a progress chart, a logbook, or a portfolio to document the students' work, feedback, and reflections. You can also use a conference schedule, a checklist, or a questionnaire to guide your conversations with the students and to provide them with guidance, encouragement, and suggestions. You can also use a peer review system, where students exchange their work with a partner or a group and give each other constructive feedback and advice.

While students are working on their learning contracts, it is essential that teachers monitor students but, as indicated here, it is also important that students own their individual growth/progress and next steps as well. In addition to implementing peer review strategies, consider allowing students the opportunity to present their portfolios to teachers, parents, and peers (student led conferencing) and determining the work samples that are included and that demonstrate progress on standards over time.

5 Assess and celebrate the outcomes

After your students complete their learning contracts, you need to assess and celebrate their outcomes. You can use the rubric, the checklist, or the scoring guide that you created at the beginning to evaluate the students' work and to give them a grade or a score. You can also use a self-assessment form, a reflection journal, or a feedback survey to ask the students to rate their own performance, to identify their strengths and weaknesses, and to set new goals for improvement. You can also use a showcase, a gallery walk, or a presentation to let the students share their work with their peers, their parents, or their community and to celebrate their achievements and efforts.
