How do you manage multi-generational teams?

There’s a really fine line between recognizing generational tendencies and stereotyping. Given how easy it is to cross that line, I’d encourage leaders to invest time getting to know each of their team members as individuals. I’d throw out any generational assumptions when you get to know them as it may change the questions you ask or don’t ask, resulting in you not getting to know them holistically. While the generation someone is in may have some influence on the lens they look at the world through, it’s just one of many. You’re far better off genuinely caring about each person and having a genuine curiosity about them, their experience, and how they see the world. Take this approach and you’ll build much stronger relationships.

Don't place the onus on "senior" members to mentor "junior" employees. Those of us who have been around the block (many, many times) should be continuing to learn from those with fresh perspectives. Leverage diverse viewpoints and knowledge to build stronger teams.

As a multi decades sales leader I’ve totally enjoyed re-generating my product knowledge, people skills experience, generational language ( and banter) along with life stage mentoring. Those teams and people have certainly got me motivated every day. Implement reverse mentoring programs where younger employees mentor senior colleagues on technology trends and digital skills. This can bridge generation gaps and create mutual learning opportunities.

Fostering a culture where every voice matters, regardless of age, has been key in my coaching. Encouraging open dialogue and recognizing each generation's contributions creates a harmonious and inclusive environment, essential for team success.

Do each of your team member know about the other's background or story? Build in a meaningful experience in your team building sessions by sharing where we come from, what made us who we are, and how do we perform at our best. Set ground rules on how you disagree or experiment. Encourage speaking up, and that it's ok to have different opinions. Lastly, who's the quiet ones in the room? they're often the hardest working or sometimes find it hard being included - seek to draw them into the discussion and value their opinion!

In my experience, it starts with an open communication. As a leader promote it, value the diverse thoughts and show empathy to all generations. And most importantly lead by example and they will follow you.

Start from the mindset that there is at least 10% right about the other person's idea or method and look for ways to build on it as a team. Like in improve, the "yes, and" technique helps span the gaps that may exist. "Yes to your idea, and we could further enhance by..." This approach keeps people focused on the strengths and skills which will enhance continuous improvement.

Promote teamwork and mentorship, encourage collaboration and knowledge sharing between generations. While some can contribute experience, others can bring fresh ideas and the scope to take calculated risks. By leveraging the strengths of each generation, you can create a dynamic team which functions on multiple variables, optimizing productivity and potential. This also invariably trains the junior team members on skills they are still learning.

An interesting aspect of leveraging generational differences, beyond being cautious of stereotyping, is recognizing the wealth of life and work experience that older generations bring to the table. This experience cannot be taught but can be learned from. In mentoring situations, I found it incredibly valuable to gain new insights and perspectives on how to approach or view things differently. Engaging with mentors from more experienced generations often leads to a broader understanding and can prompt a change in approach that enhances professional growth and decision-making.

In a multi-gen team, ditch the one-size-fits-all talk. Just like chameleons, subtly adjust your communication style to match the other person's. Look for clues in their emails, texts, and even body language. Do they use emojis and contractions? Prefer direct questions to longwinded introductions? Do they start with "hey" or prefer "hello"? Some notes: ? Mirroring isn't copying: Be yourself, but bend your style slightly to accommodate their comfort zone. ? Context matters: A formal meeting might call for more professionalism, while casual chats allow for relaxed informality. ? Openness is key: Don't hesitate to ask! Explaining your own style and inquiring about theirs can work wonders. ? Humor helps too (keep it kind, though).

Different generations may have varying communication preferences. Tailor your communication approach to accommodate different styles. For example, older team members may prefer face-to-face or phone conversations, while younger team members may be more comfortable with digital communication channels.

Be open.. be observant Being open to different views, styles and preferences is the key to deal with diversity on all accounts!! At the end of the day our customers/stakeholders are also a similar mix of diverse population and these learning’s from our internal talent will definitely help us drive business better!!

Regularly revisiting team strategies ensures they meet the evolving needs of a diverse workforce. In my coaching, I encourage feedback-driven policy updates, ensuring practices resonate with everyone from Traditionalists to Gen Z.

Review and improve your practices and policies: It's essential to regularly evaluate your workplace policies to ensure they are inclusive and fair to all generations. This could include offering flexible work options, like remote work or flexible hours, continuous learning opportunities, or benefits that cater to different generations' needs.

When reviewing policies and processes, don't do this in isolation. Encourage cross-functional, multi-discipline approaches to ensure you capture as much feedback on the existing procedures, from a diverse, and representative range of employees. I regularly witness 'wellbeing' policies encouraging participation in 'Fruit Fridays' - fine for those without gastrointestinal, autoimmune diseases, not so inclusive if you have Crohn's. Similarly, lunchtime Yoga is great if you have an already active employee demographic who keen to improve their fitness - what about those colleagues who don't want to 'stretch out their stresses'? I use extreme examples to prove a point - ask your employees and provide them with a safe space to work together.

Businesses thrive on diversity, yet we all need to believe in its purpose. I welcome different thinking and practices making a business better and service customers better. This thinking and practice has to be earned based on experience and insight. Make this clear at the recruitment stage to make life easier when managing multi generational teams.

Provide opportunities for continuous learning and skill development for all team members, regardless of their age. Offer training programs, workshops, and mentorship opportunities to help team members develop new skills and stay updated on industry trends. Recognize that different generations may have different priorities when it comes to work-life balance. Offer flexible work arrangements and support programs to help team members achieve a healthy balance between their personal and professional lives. Address conflicts and disagreements within the team promptly and constructively. Encourage open dialogue and communication to resolve conflicts in a respectful and collaborative manner.

Different generations may respond better to different leadership styles. For example, younger team members might appreciate regular feedback and guidance, while more experienced employees might prefer autonomy. That's why it's important to understand the characteristics of each generation and tailor our leadership style to match. This can be challenging. Empathetic listening and observation are the foundational skills—and the most important ones—for a leader to understand each generation. Of course, we cannot satisfy everyone, but finding the balance point is the sweet spot for leading a multi-generational team effectively.
