Ensuring you have a OMS system (Order Management system) that is able to do a lot of the work for you as a business will ensure you are on top of your inventory. It will also allow you to reduce costs as it can track inventory in multiple locations and you can set parameters to ensure the system is looking at all inventory locations before shipping to make it most cost effective pending on its final destination.

New technology is definitely changing the game with inventory management. I think the largest complication is managing the level of tech between companies. Some companies have the ability to upgrade others do not. This creates logistical nightmares in the system. I think the largest hiccup currently is in reverse logistics. The best thing that could be done is a collaboration between the masses. That way we can stay ahead of our foreign competitors. We have the infrastructure to maintain proper logistics but we need to balance out the tech throughout. If there was an initiative to get all the large companies on the same page it would push the industry so much further.
