How do you maintain your HR consulting reputation?

HR consulting offers exciting opportunities to make a positive impact on organizations' people strategies, but it also presents challenges that require adaptability, strong communication skills, and a solution-oriented mindset. The field of HR is constantly evolving, with new trends, technologies, and best practices emerging. HR consultants must stay updated on industry trends and be willing to continually learn and enhance their skills to stay competitive.

Maintaining a strong reputation is straightforward when you consistently prioritize problem-solving and put the needs of your clients/customers first.

HR has the license to get into every part of the org. and hence must understand every facet of the business and functions. We are like Org. Doctors and should be able to diagnose the issues by feeling the pulse of the org. A good consultant should have the skills of effective questioning as that will elicit the right answers. Organisation’s managers may not know the underlying issues; hence we need to diagnose and get to the root cause and make sure the key stakeholders agree. Then build the right and practical solutions that are easy and simple to implement as the crux is in implementation. If implementation is not done right then all the efforts are wasted, so best to stay close and help in the implementation of the proposed solutions.

A few of the learnings which I got from my experience of 3 years as Founder of Mindstream Consulting and of 20 years in Corporate working with some of the finest partners are: 1. Quality Work is the basic hygiene which must be taken care of. But it's a subjective expectation. 2. You are not supposed to take up all assignments. As the clients judge your credentials, you should also look at the clients expectations and their readiness to accept solutions offered. Everyone is not ready for your solutions or your diagnosis. In case you see an alignment issue here, please don't accept the consulting project. Else you will end up destroying your reputation. 3. Never ever sell your products or services cheaply. Once done, you will be branded.

It might sound simple but, from my point of view, delivering on your promises is the first building block to maintain and envolve HR consulting reputation. Every time you follow through on a commitment (it doesn't matter the size), you build trust. If you are trustworthy to others, you will have access to more information, details which will support you in creating value to clients (internal or external).

One thing I have found that creates the most value to be seen as reliable business partner is to develop your knowledge not only in HR domains, but various business domains as well. Would you rather choose the HR BP who knows all about HR or manages to adapt best HR practices flexibly depending on your business needs and understands the trends in your sector? This way as HR BP, you can also learn by doing: re-inventing HR processes and always being one step ahead the market by co-creating with managers according business dynamics.

This is critical - ensuring your own learning growth continues ensures you are able to pull from experience and your learnings to deliver best of breed options to your clients. Continuous improvement is a differentiator as a consultant rather than delivering the same old sorry offerings.

Learning and Growing is one Very important and integral aspect of any consulting work. Being away from the field creates a disadvantageous position for consultants. This makes it all the more necessary for consultants to keep their eyes, ears and analytical mind closer to the ground to observe for changes happening in organizations and their eco-system. Our clients look at us for our experience. To meet this expectation, we need to be in touch with changing realities and predict ahead of the event. This requires continuous learning. You can't meet or exceed clients expectations based on your past work. Clients are looking for new and emerging solutions, they are not content with hearing your last story.

While this comment applies to HR consulting; it really applies to most professions and sectors as well. In this data and tech age, it has changed the way we do what we used to do; but in many cases it hasn't changed what needs to be done. The need to keep learning and growing is also not new; it has been one of the key ingredients that separate those that succeed in the long run and those that don't. As your HR consultancy practice stabilizes; allot time to learn about new trends, new regulations, new tools new methods; or new ways to do old things better/faster. You never know when your new skills become your new competitive advantage.

The job of HR consultant is not a single super highway. He has to travels on different path with different set of people place product promotion and priorities. HR should be cobbler , barber , auto mechanic to handle different set of challenges with his skill set tailored to meet the client specific need vision. He can modify the outcome with clients approval taking him into confidence about outcome. HR has to learn everyday to abreast with clients requirements.

My approach to building successful client relationships has been through delivering quality work; where quality is defined by my client. I have to be acutely aware of the kind of service or value they want; and meet or exceed their expectations; while making the experience pleasant. Once that trusted advisor relationship has been established, it becomes a conversation that both client and consultant want; as opposed to a pushy sales call. Making you the top choice in the new opportunity.

Aiming to quantify and communicate the impact of your services on clients' business objectives. Sharing success stories and measurable results not only builds trust but also demonstrates the true worth of HR consulting expertise. Identify pain points, propose innovative solutions, and consistently deliver on promises. When clients see you as a strategic partner who actively contributes to their success, your reputation naturally shines.

WIP = working in public. The more you can share the real stories of clients wins and amazing outcomes they've achieved with your services, the more you will stand out from the crowd.

The work result itself show the leadership of consultant. I have seen if you win with client the words fly to different places and birds keep coming to love you. Share the winning solution which help others to move ahead. This attract the clients to get air in their sail boat. The HR consultancy sector is quite broad; besides some of the larger consulting firms who claim that can do it all, but they come at a price premium. Smaller firms need to recognize that they cannot do it all; but also that we can offer the client somethings that larger firms cannot. Be clear about your areas of expertise and what your firm does not do. It is more important to be clear about what value you bring to the table that other providers cannot. Go beyond the flashy marketing claims, show real client examples and testimonials. Where it helps, publish your opinions on the topics that align with your business to establish your thought leadership. Do not try to be everything to every client; it will hurt you in the end

The way you handle a setback says volumes about your character and therefore, your firm. Your client service needs to go above and beyond when you deal with negative feedback, a missed deadline or unhappy client. Remember, we are in the people business. Treat them as such and you will grow through a low point together.

Sometime your drive goes off road due to faulty GPS. Passengers are angry but it give you lessson to accept , realign and regroup your approach to get them back to destination. There is no point to ponder what went wrong half way, rather act to correct the course and hit the road on right path.

Life is full of challenges and setbacks. As an HR Consultant you will have to handle a lot of them. By being resilient and positive you will ensure to come out of these challenges and setback, stronger and succeed. No matter what happen you still believing in you, your experience and your strengths.

In building a HR consultancy, I take the attitude that I will either win or I will learn. Sure, some mistakes may be costly; but there are no guarantees in business. In such cases, I commit to my client to rectify the errors, at no charge, and take ownership of the issue. In most cases, the client was willing to overlook the minor errors as long as the eventual goal of the project was achieved. I often leverage the post project briefings to put the mistakes as well as successes into positive context. That said, I also push back when clients try to strong arm their mistake onto my firm. As a principle, my firm takes ownership of our mistakes and not others; and we are prepared to lose some clients over this.

Being a consultant means being able to provide new insights or clear analysis or both, to help solve a client’s dilemma. To do this, it’s critical to develop thinking agility, that is, ability to shift perspective from wide to narrow, and to pan across different possibilities. It’s also paramount to understand fully the client’s field of view, so that you can help fill in gaps or support to discover new grounds as needed.

As a consultant, your professionalism, integrity and knowledge need to be topnotch. You identify is defined by your work, deliverables and client references - so you have to ace every assignment. Since you don't work within the comfort of an organization structure, you need to be self driven, self motivated and navigate through complex client scenarios.

From my point of view, maintaining transparent and open communication with clients, ensuring they are continuously updated on project progress and potential hurdles, while also actively listening to their concerns and objectives, is a MUST! Implementing strong quality control measures to guarantee consistency and precision in consulting services is essential. Regularly evaluating and enhancing processes and methodologies further enhances the overall service quality.

2 Hs: Honesty and Humor. From my experience, clients who choose to hire an HR Consultant are comparing among a few of us and after assessing our experience, knowledge, skills and abilities they then choose a person, rather than a product. Being upfront about our own values about work, people and priorities (not only theirs, but our own), has often been a differentiator for me. I've built many strong relationships with clients who appreciate when I tell them that their need can be easily filled rather than create an enormous billable project. Clients also want to enjoy the interaction. Humor is an amazing tool that transforms the mundane into something enjoyable.
