I agree. It's imperative to use a style guide when writing for any standard publication. For news stories you're most likely going to be using AP style. I recommend subscribing to the AP style guide online since guidelines change over time and new usage cases will continue to be added. Also, consider your own house style if writing for a business. Technical terms, for example, may not be included in the AP guide but you should be consistent with your usage. If there is no guideline for a term, use what the majority of the industry (in the U.S.) is using when it comes to capitalization and plurality and add it to your house style guide when you do.
