This is always a good first step, even if you decide to refactor/rewrite later. The main thing to watch out for is that you don't end up adding so much overhead that you slow things down appreciably. But, normally, this will not be an issue.

It is helpful to keep in mind that the code was considered "Good-to-go" or "Production-ready" when written. It'd be prudent to respect the original author's set of constraints or concerns and give them the benefit of the doubt before hacking away at it. A little empathy goes a long way! and you may even end up learning a thing or two in the process.
