In any new project, I recommend getting to know who the stakeholders are and what their idea of success is. That is a huge factor to the overall success of your project. Even though you might come up with what you consider a great design, it won't fly if it stakeholders don't see it as valuable. Knowing what the stakeholders' pain points are and what they consider successful will help you craft a solution that is both aesthetically on brand, beautiful, and solves the business problem at hand. Predictable, repeatable, results are the goal. Following a style guide is important in keeping a brand cohesive from print to web. Choose colors that will translate well from each color space (PMS, CMYK and Hex). Always keep your high res images in tact and “save as” needed for each project. Know your industries standards and best practices. SWOP and SNAP are useful guidelines to keeping variables in-line for print, and Web W3C will keep you in compliance online. Fonts can be troublesome and should be vectorized with a logo upon clients final approval. Just remember…if you can measure it, you can control it!

Most larger companies already have this brand guide in place, so if you are a freelancer it is your responsibility to learn and adhere to it. If you are in a position to create this document, consider all ways that the logos and other collateral will be used when limiting or allowing creative freedom with the imagery. Too often a brand guide is so restrictive that designers are handcuffed from doing good work that attracts the audience.

A style guide gives you the boundaries within which you can design and create. It is designed to provide guidance and not to inhibit creativity. It provides the "rules of the road" for producing content for your organization.

The worst thing that a designer can do is to make the brand guide too prescriptive at the start. If the guide can’t evolve, neither can the brand. Chill out and make the guide exactly that. Not a Bible. A guide.

I started using style guides a few years ago for the purpose of freeing up my designers. When styles such as main titles, headings, online buttons, secondary buttons and such are set, then designers are free to power their creativity into the main images and layouts that matter so much. This prevents time and thought power wasted on things like, "How rounded should I make the corners of this button," or "Should I make it flat or 3-d?" Once those are in place, all creative power can go into impactful main graphics.

With a style guide, you can decide to pursue the audacious and your style guide would caution you when you have gone too far. Now as for the case of maintaining consistent high quality graphics, style guide helps with versatility, for example landscape, portrait, on a t-shirt, billboard, with a style guide you can maneuver all these and still maintain consistency across all while being lossless in value of graphics.

Hire a competent designer! A good designer will also be a good technician, and can dial in the technical aspects of each usage. So many companies give this "last mile" task to a low level marketing person with no artistic or technical expertise, and it makes the entire company look bad.

Make sure when creating logos and other graphics that they will work in multiple environments: i.e. print, web, outdoor, and so on. Don't create your primary logo in Photoshop and expect it to scale for print or outdoor use. Also, many vendors need vector (line-art) versions for output, so starting in that format and saving copies for the web is a better strategy than originally creating a logo in bitmap format. Also, companies will commonly have a larger, more detailed logo and then an icon or identifiable version that can be used in smaller applications or as accents. Try to create logos so that this is possible.

Interview your end users. It’s important to get feedback from different sources that will use your product. Ask insightful questions that provide opportunities for improving the user experience.

It takes around 1,5 to 2 years until your skills are outdated. Please stay up to date about graphic design and technologies in general. For example; generative AI is super big now, and many people are complaining about how AI is going to make specific creative jobs obsolete. Try to get those technologies on your side, and merge your personality with the new tech to create a new skill that supports you for the near future.

An important thing to keep in mind is that, in order to maintain consistency, you have to know the tool you’re using inside and out. For instance, if you’re working primarily in Figma, auto-layout will help with maintaining a consistent format. Create styles, and use components and variables to make your job easier. Additionally, make sure that margins and padding are uniform throughout your design, especially across different platforms. If the spacing isn’t consistent, a lot of people won’t know what exactly has been changed, but they will notice that something about your design seems “off.”

Design is, to me, like architecture or city engineering; certain elements must be built-to-code, solid, ergonomic, and dependable. Once the design framework is laid out, and adheres to the needs of the client and marketplace, it is a less crucial, more detailed design element which I enjoy adding as a flourish- and which unfailingly, render the most gasps of impressed response. Getting the right "specs" upfront is key and can save a lot of time down the line. Luckily programs have improved in terms of providing defaults when it comes to social media, print, ux etc.. A lot of specs are available on social media sites so you can refer to those as well. Make sure your files are properly setup for web and print when you go to export them in adobe platforms: (color spaces: rgb/cmyk and resolution i.e.- 72,150,300 and beyond). I like to also label files accordingly so that I know where and when to apply files later on.
