How do you leverage concurrency and parallelism to improve Java performance?

Concurrency is about dealing with lots of things at once. Parallelism is about doing lots of things at once. In concurrent systems, multiple actions can be in progress (may not be executed) at the same time. Meanwhile, multiple actions are simultaneously executed in parallel systems.

Leveraging concurrency allows for the simultaneous handling of multiple tasks, leading to improved responsiveness and more efficient use of resources. By utilizing parallelism, tasks can be executed in parallel, resulting in enhanced throughput and reduced execution time for computationally intensive operations. This approach enables a more efficient and effective use of available resources, ultimately leading to improved performance and productivity.

I have explained with real world example how Concurrency and Parallelism works: Concurrency: Imagine a chef who has to prepare multiple dishes. The chef is handling multiple tasks at once by working on one dish, then switching to another while waiting for the first one to cook. The chef is juggling between tasks (i.e., tasks are progressing concurrently, but the chef is only actively cooking one dish at a time). Parallelism: Now imagine two chefs in the kitchen. Each chef works on a separate dish at the same time. Here, both tasks are happening in parallel.

Concurrency in java is often managed using therads, where each thread represents a seperate path of execution. Java provides different ways to handle it where to achieve higher level concurrency we can utilize ExecutorService (Which provides API for managing thread pools, making it easier to execute the task concurrently without needing to manually manage the threads)
