Learning DDL syntax and test logic in db at small scale dataset is a good start but it does not give full picture. In the real world this operation is much more complex as the table side grows above a few hundreds gb size. It can create all sorts of blocking due to exclusive locking need, and degradation of performance on the system when performed with the ONLINE option, It needs plenty of disk space to accommodate log file space expansion due to ongoing transactions, and needs continuous monitoring of the db/server. Some relational db engines also provide an option to pause/resume such operations which is very helpful when running on large tables that can take multiple hours/day worth time to complete.
