Capturing requirements from the various UX research is a big part of making sure that you have something to validate to. It will allow you to formally document needs and expectations, and will allow change to those requirements to be controlled. Uncontrolled requirement changes will lead to scope creep, in which you try to solve the world, but end up doing nothing particularly well. The best example of this is the Bradley Fighting Vehicle, which started its life as a concept for a troop transporter, but ended up being a very poor battle tank that had more flaws than advantages because the customer tried to feed in too many needs into one project.

One needs to proactively seek feedbacks from customers by using surveys, interviews, focus groups, or user testing. We should engage directly with customers to gain insight into their challenges, preferences, and expectations. This continuous conversation assists in confirming whether your innovations are in line with their requirements.

When collecting feedback form users, asking the right questions is a critical step that is often overlooked. Many surveys will ask general questions like, “how happy are you with our product”, when specific questions will get you much better results. Ask about specific innovative features, or in-app functions, and see if they notice your changes, as well as what their opinions of them are. Additionally, keep in mind that feedback is not always right, and what works for one user might not be the case for another. Feedback should be used as a way to find patterns in user experiences that can be turned into improvements, but that doesn’t mean they always will.

Documenting everything is a must. One of the key points of every innovation project is that you can learn from the past, so you speed up innovation and time-to-market in the future. Spending time at the end of the project to analyse all decisions, discussions and actions is also just as important as during the project itself.

Innovation value can be more earnings for your company, more customers, more market share, improved efficient or better margins.

The starting point for an innovation initiative is to truly understand the customer “pain-points” in the relevant market segment. An innovation is not an end in itself, but a means-to-an-end, to resolve the customer pain-point.
