Many of our clients over the years have developed online learning activities, implemented them, and tested their efficacy as part of their doctoral research. Aligning the research questions with the methodology is one of the most important first steps in that process. This typically happens during the analysis planning stage. When overlooked, it can lead to tremendous headaches later.

Evaluating your online learning activities requires consideration of your goals, context, and resources. Feedback surveys are a common method; they can be used to collect quantitative and qualitative data through tools like Google Forms or SurveyMonkey. Analytics features of your LMS or other online platforms can track and analyze data related to online learning activities. If this is a doctoral project, I would encourage researchers to use either qualitative or quantitative approaches, and only opt for mixed methods if the research absolutely requires it. In my experience working with thousands of doctoral candidates, mixed methods projects - while ultimately very impressive - tend to take much longer to complete, are more complicated, and can lead to additional hurdles that slow down the path to graduation.

The final step of evaluating your online learning activities is to act on your findings and use them to improve your teaching and learning. You can use the data and insights from your evaluation to identify the strengths and weaknesses of your online learning activities, to make adjustments or modifications to them, or to create new ones.
