Management is about guidance AND review. You should be guiding your team all the way thru and then meeting with them INDIVIDUALLY to discuss the pros and cons. That allows you to set the path for their next project, guiding them where they need it and watching to see if all aspects improve.

We use Asana as our event production project management tool. We track all tasks and deliverables and assign team members as either 'leads' or 'collaboraters'. We list our targets and milestones and communicate status reports in Asana. This helps our team stay on track and accountable at every stage of the planning process.

I also have found that creating "office hours" 1 hour a week that is open for people to contact you directly with any questions, sets an open door policy that still allows you as the event planner to get work done and a boundary for when you are available to answer questions.

Being able to give the whole team a briefing of what the event is, who it's for, and what the most important highlights are is something I have found helpful. When everyone on the ground understands scope and context of the project, they are easier to lead, more capable of prioritizing and asking good questions, and work as a team to stay on track.

It is also vital to establish strong communication routes and feedback loops, especially in today's increasingly distant and distributed work contexts. Effective communication keeps everyone involved and informed, promoting a sense of connection despite geographical barriers. Providing training and support demonstrates a commitment to the team's growth and success. Identifying skill gaps and providing suitable training not only promotes confidence but also improves overall work quality.

Training and support need to be provided in adequate time prior to the event. If that cannot be done, then you as the event planner can teach on the job, which is honestly the best way to learn event planning. Creating a training timeline, providing one-on-one training when necessary, and creating ways for connections such as communities of practice is vital. Technology is always changing and providing resources directly from the sources instead of updating internal documents constantly, will help keep the trainings up to date without constant revision.
