Being curious and helpful is the secret! Instead of: "What do you do these days?" Try "Your company's project on [topic] was impressive. What were your biggest challenges?" Once engaged, focus on them. If they mention facing a challenge, don't just sympathize – offer value! "We tackled something similar. Have you explored [solution/resource]?" or "I recently read an article on that – mind if I share it?" Even at events try "I'm here because of [Speaker/Topic] – resonates with my interest in [Specific Area]. What brought you here?" Then, delve deeper into their response, showcasing genuine curiosity and offering relevant insights.

It seems sales-y - but people like a good story. Don't give too much up front. But prime their interest with a catchy lead-in.

To keep networking conversations engaging, I've found that starting with a hook works wonders. A few months back, I attended an industry event and felt the usual nervousness of meeting new people. Instead of the usual “What do you do?”, I started conversations with an intriguing question or compliment relevant to the event. I once complimented someone’s unique approach to a problem we’d just heard in a panel. That hook sparked a deep, insightful conversation. The key is to be authentic—people can tell when you’re genuinely interested. A well-placed question or story leads naturally to more meaningful discussions.

Find common ground, but don’t just talk about yourself—offer value, whether it's advice, resources, or connections. Remember to follow up with something memorable from your conversation, showing that you were attentive and interested in building a meaningful connection.

Turn on your curiosity. Ask lots of follow up questions. The most simplest and basic questions can get the person to open up. Here are some questions to consider: how did that make you feel?; what did you do next?; was that an easy decision for you?; what have you tried?; can you explain that part in more detail? Become an investigator. And have genuine interest in wanting to get to know the other person.

I cringe a little when I hear listening described as a collection of skills. These skills do have their place, and can help people improve in their listening, but true listening is much more than that. Networking is about building authentic connections. Nothing beats genuine listening from the heart. Being truly interested in the other person - for their own sake, not for what you might get from them - is priceless. I don't think it's possible to break this down into a list of skills or specific actions. It comes from within, from having a genuine interest in others.

My favorite method to keep networking conversations going is a combination of two things. 1. Active Listening 2. What I call the "branching" technique Basically, when the other person is telling you something, listen for anything that peaks your curiosity, and then build a question from that. For example, if someone tells me they studied law but then ended up in working in tech, I can ask any of the following: a. Oh, what made you want to study law in the 1st place? b. How did you stumble into the tech space? c. Do you think your law background helped you in anyway? If you repeat this method well, you'll virtually never run out of things to ask.

Talk about how you help people and tell stories about how you uniquely solve people's problems. Then you can showcase your credibility and your reliability - both of which are the key components to building trust. It's no accident that we grew up learning from stories. They are way more engaging than a features and benefits presentation!

I quickly learned that sharing stories can transform a conversation. At a conference, I met a senior developer, and instead of diving into technical talk, I shared how a failed project taught me resilience. Instantly, the atmosphere shifted—we connected on a human level. He responded by sharing his own setbacks, and that conversation opened doors for future collaborations. They’re not just facts; they carry emotions, lessons, and experiences that others relate to, keeping the dialogue alive and meaningful.

No one cares about your story - unless it's relevant for the context. First delve deeper into the other party's story before relating. "I like tomatoes as my mother cooked them" "oh! and I like apples because they grow in my yard" That kind of stuff won't work. Let one person be in the spotlight for a longer period.

Sharing stories is vital to learning more about who you're wanting to connect with. Whether you're sharing a story or listening to one. Keying in on the engagement and feedback plays a huge part into what that person is interested in. Engaging in the story creates more appreciation of what's being said and getting more in depth. And it's always a good call back in a later conversation in a follow up

Stories enrich conversations by making them more engaging and memorable. By selecting relevant topics and adding vivid details, emotions, and humor, you create deeper connections and leave a lasting impact.

Finding common ground is key to building rapport. By sharing relatable stories and showing genuine interest in others' perspectives, you create a more engaging and comfortable conversation environment.

If you've identified a person that you wish to connect with, you can start by following their content or reviewing their profile to see what are they curious, interested or an expert in. And if only you do have common interests or areas to talk about, you can highlight these when you reach out. Definitely don't put up a show or falsely state having an interest/expertise in say "ABC" in the naming of connecting with them. They'll smell it from far.

Common ground is a lightning-quick way to build trust with a new contact. Most people ask a question and then move onto a different one - almost like an interrogation. Instead, after you ask a question, take a moment to absorb the response of the other person. Did you agree with what they said? Did you disagree? Or maybe you could simply relate. Regardless, voice those thoughts! It shows that you're actually paying attention and the other person will appreciate it.

What's an obvious common ground for two strangers talking for the first time at a networking event? The fact that you're both at a networking event. Ask about why they are there, how they found out about the event, and who've they met at the event so far...remember to share a little of yourself in between all of your questions... ...and listen to your conversation partner's answers to find additional questions to ask, with the purpose of trying to get to know them a little better. You may find out that you have more in common than the fact that you're both at a networking event.

Don't be the crowd pleaser for the God Almighty. No research will give you common ground with everyone. Sometimes the bond comes out of strife, not alignment. With mutual respect, obviously. Allow yourself not to have a common ground.

A lot of people will feel uncomfortable with the description of this "strategy" of establishing your credibility...identifying their needs...offering insights, etc. It all sounds very cold and clinical. And yet, I would advocate for adding value to others. It just needs to be genuine. If it is strategic and calculating, that will become evident with time. My advice is to do these things, but without approaching it as a strategic move, like a chess game. When your intention in adding value is to actually add value, and/or to be a person who adds value, you will be able to engage more authentically with others and undertake true relationship building (authentic networking).

First give. Then give. Later on, give some more. In order to ask, you gotta provide first. The mindset of "I'm here to help others" instead of "I'm here to do business" helps tremendously.

Share your expertise: Offer insights or advice on topics related to your field. Ask insightful questions: Show genuine interest in your conversation partner and their experiences. Provide resources: Share relevant articles, books, or contacts. Offer to help: Let your conversation partner know how you can support them in the future. Be specific: Tailor your contributions to the individual interests and needs of your conversation partner. Avoid bragging: Focus on highlighting your accomplishments without coming across as arrogant. Be authentic: Let your genuine interest and enthusiasm shine through.

A lot of times people start networking because they need something, which creates a problem from the start--they come to the table hungry when it's a pot-luck dinner. But what if you can't think of something to offer? You may not have the resources to be someone's new customer. You're trying to grow your income or revenue, not increase expenses. Well, you may be able to offer expertise or experience. After learning more about your conversation partner, think about what piece of knowledge you can share. It could be something that just let's that person know that he/she isn't in it alone--you can relate. And maybe you aren't that source of knowledge, but someone you know is. Making an intro could be priceless.

By ending your networking conversations with a clear and engaging call to action, you can increase the likelihood of building lasting relationships and achieving your networking goals. Summarize key points: Briefly recap the main topics you discussed to reinforce your conversation partner's understanding. Thank your conversation partner for their time and insights. Suggest a follow-up action, such as scheduling a meeting, exchanging contact information, or connecting on social media. Provide your contact information or a link to your website or LinkedIn profile. Tailor your call to action to the individual: Consider your conversation partner's interests and goals when suggesting a next step.

Following through on a call to action at the end of a conversation is so important. Its sets you apart when you take action and schedule the next meeting or send a message on LinkedIn. Relationships need to be nurtured and that is why follow through on commitments from conversations is a differentiator. This is especially true if it is a business opportunity you are nurturing along.

Ending your conversations with a CTA will skyrocket the chances of that connection lasting long-term. And it doesn't have to be difficult either. Simply thank them for their time and then propose a follow-up chat. A phrase I like to use is: "It was great talking with you! I had more questions but it seems like we're out of time, could we continue this sometime next week?"

Specific to networking (versus a sales call) a call to action would be towards the goal of having another interaction and it could be as small as an email or social media exchange. End the conversation by sharing emails or letting the person know that you'll reach out on LinkedIn. Then do it. In the message let the person know that you enjoyed the conversation at _________ event and you look forward to continuing the conversation soon. That's it. When your next networking event comes up reach back out with the details and invite that person to join you. And continue the conversation.

It is beneficial to have multiple call-to-actions prepared for various situations. Not every individual will become a client or business partner, so it's essential to guide conversations towards relevant call-to-actions. Use qualifying questions to determine the most appropriate call-to-action based on the individual's needs and interests. By having several options well-rehearsed, you can effectively tailor your approach to different people, ensuring that each conversation contributes to advancing your mission or goals.

In a conversation, if we've spent most of the time talking, we usually walk away feeling like it was a good conversation. Conversely, if you were the one on the other side of the conversation (being talked to), you might not feel the same way about the interaction. Consider spending a third of the time talking and the rest of the time listening. It'll help you ask good questions, which helps keep your conversation partner engaged.

The most important part of networking, and unfortunately the most neglected, is to follow-up. Follow-up doesn’t need to take much time. In many cases, simply mentioning that it was nice to speak with them and offering a follow-up discussion is enough. If appropriate, let them know you’re open to assisting them in the future and to feel free to contact you. If they gave you advice, let them know what you did with that advice. If you offered to help them in some way, be sure to do so.
