In my experience the best use of a buddy program is to help the new employee become immersed in the company's processes and "culture." The buddy program is part of new hire orientation but the information provided covers territory such as "whom do I go to for X?" But most importantly it is to ensure that the new employee meets their peers and is included in social activities such as lunch or Happy Hour.

I created a "job description" for a buddy that included the goals and ways that the buddy can reach those with the new employee. Typically the first month of the program was more intensive as the buddy checks in frequently with the new hire and guides them. By the third month the new employee should be immersed well enough that the buddy can step back.

Something I have seen work well in my previous experience is buddies supporting other buddies. This also speaks to the point above on providing training and resources for buddies and setting them up for success. An infrastructure of support around the buddies is critical - one way that can be facilitated is through an information session for the buddies, where they get to know each other and what they hope to learn by participating in the program. Camaraderie created early on can enable buddies to have a support system, and also has the added benefit of creating future cross-team collaboration opportunities.

Reward the buddy, I have seen a lot of buddy programs fail because of this. Can't expect a buddy to give, give give, without ever receiving!
