Later we examined protagonist/antagonist, setting, theme, etc. The students found it very engaging. For poetry, you can use popular songs. Non-fiction, online articles. Drama, movies, of course.

I find that the genres don’t mean a lot if I don’t also spend time thinking of a context the readers would have. Harriet Beecher Stowe writes during a time when writing is both dramatic and emotional. Readers of the pre Civil War era were accustomed to the style, so her abolition message was delivered in pop culture terms. My students get it in that tone.
