We see these behaviors mostly in expansive clays. These are clays with a Liquid Limit higher than 50. Generally, when these clays are unweathered they swell and shrink when they are highly weathered. The worst damage comes from older montmorillonite clays like the Yazoo clay in Central Mississippi. These clays are known to damage shallow foundations when they are as deep as 8 feet from the surface

If we would stop cutting down trees to build new homes . Wiping out everything standing to build new communities. Cutting Dow 100+ year old trees and thinking that planting twigs will replace what was taken down. Maybe we wouldn’t have such issues with the soil…. Maybe
